Is it only me?

I visit dramabeans everyday. It is one of my favorite websites. Unfortunately, it is also the most malicious website that I visit. I can not linger on the site for too long or my browser will lock up. I often have to relaunch my browser at least once in order to read a long post. It can be a real headache to get to it’s wonderful content. I am browsing with the most current version of Chrome and only have one extension loaded. This extension simply sets a new tab to my default home page. I have tried everything that I can think of and this website still causes my browser to go into the weeds. Am I the only person having issues? I would appreciate any assistance that you would be willing to provide. Thank you in advance.

It's not just you. I have had to individually block functions of the site. I think it's the ads (the viki links/ads seem fine). they really need someone to curate it. The viki stuff is fine but aspects of it need someone to overhaul the code which I'm guessing is not easy.

Saaame. I use uBlock Origin (way recommend over adblock btw) on my laptop but leave them enabled on my mobile cause they are less problematic there, and I mostly browse on mobile anyway. Moral dilemma for sure tho...

Ads are 3rd party, DB has no control over them except to not have ads or to go to another ad company.

This is a problem -- if we install adblocker, DB makes no money and then if enough people do it, DB will not be able to continue.

But, unfortunately, the ads make reading DB on some platforms unreadable. For me, I can't read DB on mobile without an adblocker (it crashes/hangs the page about 80% of the time). So should I just not read DB then and not give them any clicks, or should I read with adblocker and just use up their bandwidth without giving them money?

Moral dilemma for me.

Exactly why I did individual blocks. it was worth the extra time. They really need to swap ad companies.

If you use chrome or Firefox, absolutely get ublock origin for ad blocking (way better than ad blocker IMO and uses less memory) and maybe ghostery to block trackers. IPhone, dolphin is good for blocking ads.

Required fields are marked *

I had the same problem. I finally broke down and turned on adblocker for the site. I don't like using adblocker on sites like these because that's how these type of sites make money. But it was making the site not work for me and some of the ads were making it hard to view the site, so I finally turned it on :(

Required fields are marked *

My browsers don't lock up.

But it is a pain to read DB on my smartphone for sure, due to the ads. I was also forwarded to some other (malicious?) sites while reading DB.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

As others have said, DB cannot run without ad revenue. But I, too, had to resort to using an ad blocker because the ads were hijacking or freezing my browser. Luckily, I found a solution that is working for me, and is still producing some ad revenue for DB: I'm using the Adblock browser on Android, and I have the "allow nonintrusive ads" setting enabled. The browser is able to filter out the malicious ones, and I haven't had any problems since then.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I could be wrong, but I thought that the revenue is only generating by a click.

Meaning that if one just keep staring at the ad, that won't help DB. One has to actually click on the ad to gain revenue.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

You are correct. Simply running or seeing ads generates nothing. Nearly all ads are "pay if clicked". I have found an occasional ads that just takes forever to load, thus locking up the page until it times out or finally responds, so ended up enabling Adblock+ on Chrome.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Nope, there are two types (I think). There's cost-per-click and cost-per-impression. The latter just needs to load, no need for visitor to click through. But it pays way less than the click type.

I'm not sure which one DB uses though.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

You're right - but the pay for impression ones are way cheaper - have seen some as low as 60 cents per 1000 impressions. Pay per click can run anywhere from a few cents each to as much as $1+ each.

They're all very stiff and ultra-aware. I think it's because stories might have such a history of being connected with learning and morals and noble beings that actors are too aware of that. Which makes the serious dramas too stiff and the humorous ones almost apologetic with all that mugging wink-wink to the audience. No actor seems to feel comfortable in portraying real characters. It's like they want to show you they are acting. Not sure i'm saying that well but I get that vibe from the acting.

All that said, I'm gonna try to watch for some good cdramas this season.

I have seen very few Chines dramas that were very good. Like maybe 2 or 3 at most. The Taiwan ones are way too super-cheesy, and the Mainland ones suffer a lot from censorship and those devious little pro-Communist Party propaganda lines.

None have anything even approaching realistism - which perhaps explains why k-dramas and US dramas are are far more popular in China than Chinese ones.

0

It can be hard to find good C-Dramas, for sure. I really liked Nirvana In Fire. The production values were top notch and I liked the acting. I'm currently watching Good Times (rom-com). I'm going to check out Wu Xin: The Monster Killer next.

Hi there superfox,

I'm watching MotW and 38 Task Force, too. In fact, I've taken on the task force of recapping it, so if you have time, stop by and leave your comments! Working hard to get ep 4 up today, then I'll be caught up for this weekend. Seo In Guk - such a natural at swindling his way into our hearts!

I have strawberries, too, also not a lot but they're a delicious mouthful, very sweet! My lavender plants are doing well and are very fragrant. I'm keeping the garden small so that I can keep up with pruning and weeding early in the day since it's incredibly hot.

Happy July!

Oh, gardening in heat is a real pain, I know. Last weekend I was doing that, it was +33C in the shadow and might have been +45 right under the sun, no wind either. But we had too much work to just manage with the early hours, even when we got up at 4.30am. the good thing is early morning is my favorite time, the whole world is yours alone then.
I also have lavender, grown from a seed. the other one that we bought and planted couldn´t take the winter frost. trying to get seeds from the surviving one, which seems to be more resilient.

oh I´ll be sure to check out your recaps of 38TF! The drama took quite some time for setting up the team and is kind of like a very long equation on a blackboard. but thanks to SIG I haven´t felt a moment of boredome. He makes me believe in his character, he is so in the game that when you look at him you are pulled in too.

gosh it is hard to write, I ate a whole jar of fresh pickles, they are soooooo good. only had strawberries and pickles whole day and I am so full. how can people eat so much in kdramas.... I can´t do it...

Made a pattern for a backbag, I want to make it out of felt scraps, thick linen canvas and silver-colored straps. The bag itself will be sort of greenish-blackish... there are way many parts though, I hope I don´t get mixed up.

and I made word clouds to print on pillows. I am not sure if I found the best word cloud creator. it is pretty good though. But I kind of remember using a different one before, that had more shapes. Dunno.
http://tagul.com/go?tag=$word

re-watched all the episodes of MotW and finally know why I was confused: I seem to have skipped half an episode, where Jun was seeing ghosts! and it is so hilarious, how did I not watch that? perhaps got half way one evening and opened the next ep next day...he needs Ninja teacher to help him learn to fight though. He has to stop just sprinting off like a ball of lightning.

Seems like the theme for the next patch of dramas is Fighting Girls - martial arts, weightlifting, more martial arts...

Happy Friday Beanies! My plate is full of dramas- a month ago I hardly watched dramas "real time", now I'm watching not 1, not 2, but 4 Kdramas and 2 Jdramas! I "blame" you Beanies for my new addiction.

Just finished watching Jdrama 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi and I'm really hoping they do a sequel. I like how every episode was a new case to defend and yet how there was a overarching storyline to gel it all together.
And I know everyone loves Police Unit 38 but I wish it was like that instead of how it is dragging out this one current scam against the smug evil dude and the commissioner. I hope the plot moves ahead faster this week! (SIG fans don't kill me, he still is very suave and cool, my grouse is against the plot)

Also just started watching Jdrama Happy Marriage- it stars Dean Fujioka who I first saw, believe it or not, in Just You- a Taiwanese drama with Aaron Yan/Puff Guo. Is anyone else watching? It's so predictable but I'm in it for the pretty.

And I can't decide what to do about Beautiful Mind- it's so darn confusing and half of me is considering rewatching episodes over again and taking notes to figure out the plot, but I'm wondering if I'm giving the writer too much credit and I'm going to be wasting my time. ?
Oh yes, and shoutout to @pogo: haven't seen you around much this week, wondering if you have fixed your keyboard yet? Vhat vill ve do for laughs vithout it? ?

I wasn't thrilled with how serious his last drama was (it was good) so maybe we'll have to take turns Oshi!

I think what is great about 38PU is Sung-Il has to treat the much younger Jung-Do as an expert in this case, a more experienced professional, while Sung-Il himself is pretty clueless and blue-eyed in such matters, even though he is in a position where he is supposed to know the secrets of the swindlers´ souls. But I still think there is probably something Jung-Do will learn from him too. If they have him be the ultimate swindling genius to the end without ever giving leverage to the older guy, it will feel unnatural. a guy has to have at least one victory to stay in the league.

What's your favorite jdrama? I haven't really seen one that has the same production quality or charecter development that kdramas have. Also do you know of a good anime that does not have supernatural elements?

I ask because I live in Japan and need to learn Japanese, but haven't really got into the media aspect of things.

Required fields are marked *

First let me say, how envious I am that you live in Japan. I love the food and the culture and want to go there again. (Haven't been in 10 years!)

Unfortunately I only recently started watching Jdramas, so I don't have a favourite really...

I know what you mean about the production quality, but what I like about J dramas is that they are shorter and some can be very humorous, offbeat and quirky, which I like. Sometimes Kdramas drag out the story too long and I get bored. I really liked 99.9 Keiji Sermon Bengoshi though, but it has no romance. I like sports related dramas so i liked Buzzer Beat which has Yamapi, though that one is quite old.

Hope this helps, and good luck on learning Japanese! Im starting Korean lessons soon and Im quite excited.

I know u're asking Michykdrama..but..hehe

Jdramas have wide range of theme and stories, but unfortunately many of them are not as 'grand' or neat as kdramas in term of drama production. Ridiculous hair style, 'unique' fashion and bizzare characters are commonly found. I want to recommend you some but pardon me, my recs are a bit old, because I haven't watch any recently. Here they are:
Bloody Monday
Soratobu Kohoushitsu (2013)
Proposal Daisakusen (2008)
Zenkai Girl

I'm not really fond with 'Rich Man Poor Woman' but many people love it.

Hope it helps ?

Yess, Bloody Monday is FANTASTIC. It's a bit older (2008?) so the production values aren't like what you'd find today, especially in KDramas, but the story and pacing... it's just so addictive. And fantastic characters. And so many female characters!! So! Many! And in an action/suspense/thriller show!

The show will ruin your sense of trust... don't trust anyone!

I still thinking about bloody Monday and then I remember it's the hacker story with Hiroki Narimiya at the end, love that one

Soratobou is one of my favorite too, it has go ayano,

Pro-dai keeps making me cry, one of the penultimate 2nd chance story imo and I find Yamapi really fitting the character as wallflower, it's hard to notice him in the original timeline and he indeed needs to change that,

Zenkai girl is cute, I almost mistook it as Switch Girl in my mind,

Love your recommendation ^^

There are some awesome dramas out there. Some of my favorites are:
-Liar game (all of them!)
- Kazoku Game
- Priceless
- Bitter Blood
- Nobunaga Concerto
- Hero
- I'm Home
- A million stars falling from the sky ( OK, I admit it, I'll watch almost anything if KimuraTakuya is in it, but most of them are really great!)
- Never let me go

Can't think of anymore... but I do agree that if you should watch Hana Yori Dingo, just because it is a classic hehe!

0

I hope you don't mind my answer about the Jdrama (I can't help my keyboard)
Favorite Jdrama
- Hana Kimi (totally bias mode for Nakatsu)
- Wakamonotachi/All about my sibling
- Mozu
- DR. JIN
- Hanzawa Naoki
- Manhattan Love Story
- anything with Masato Sakai, Eita and Go Ayano

about anime without supernatural element ,
you might like the slice of life or the romance genre or Shojo anime, not the monster or shounen that usually more popular, as the example:
- Nana
- Your lie in April
- Honey and Clover
- My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
- Hanasaku Iroha
- Kimi to Boku

if you tried this anime, it's another world about animation that doesn't include fighting to the death (even though that kinda my favorite Genre)

ann ah hunter x hunter is in hiatus again, I hope Togashi get well soon.

JesO, my advice in watching J-Dramas is forget about production values. J-Dramas are decidedly non-pretentious, and as soon as you embrace the simpler quality, you'll actually learn to enjoy it. It's such a nice change from the super slick (sometimes TOO slick) cinematography of the latest K-Dramas. I've actually seen more J-Dramas than K-Dramas, so I'm trying to watch lots of K-Dramas to even out my balance and thus my recommendations are a bit older for the most part, but here they are:

-Bloody Monday (2008), as already mentioned, if you want something super addictive and thrilling and pretty messed up. Don't feel bad if you end up falling for the villain... J's a totally screwed up bastard but Narimiya Hiroki makes him strangely attractive. Oops. There are two seasons!

-Kazoku Game (2013), a drama you don't expect to be a psychological thriller but it totally is. This is not a realistic drama in any way, but it says lots of interesting things about society and parenting that DO apply to real life. If you want to watch something pretty crazy (in a good way), I recommend it.

-The Memorandum of Kyoko Okitegami (2015), the only really recent one I've seen. It's light mystery fare with a charming cast of characters. It's not deep or really that addictive, but such a pleasant watch.

-1 Litre of Tears (2005), a classic, only watch if you want to bawl your eyes out.

-Hana Yori Dango (2005)--HEAR ME OUT, do NOT judge this drama because of Boys Over Flowers. HYD is actually a pretty well-made drama with an awesome heroine portrayed by the amazing Inoue Mao. You will love Makino Tsukushi, even if you hated Jan-di. Two seasons plus a movie.

-Hana Kimi (2007), totally light, fluffy fare, but so much fun to watch. You just might have to turn your brain off. Ikuta Toma is the real highlight of this drama and it's honestly worth the watch just for his character.

-Legal High (2012), a pee-your-pants hilarious legal comedy. This is more on the ridiculous comedy side, but the two leads make it work, and the way they bounce off each other is amazing. If you want something purely entertaining, look no further. It'a a total riot. Two seasons and two specials (although I haven't seen the last special yet).

Tried to give a good variety of thrillers, rom-coms, procedurals, and comedies. Hope you find some J-Dramas that work for you! Again, don't compare them to K-Dramas. They're very different. :)

I just googled Siren. No, I don't know if that's it. But I think I'll go find Siren online to watch.

The serial killer ones were
1) a girl who has run away from home. I think she might have been abused by her father. She is being tracked but she's always one step ahead. She's damaged and dangerous. I remember a scene with her and a kid.

The second one is about
2) a woman whom men just become entranced with. She has femme fatalism galore. I think her picture was the thumbnail for the drama. She looks very frail. A cop starts tracking her and she tells him he may be her brother. But she's also got another lover. Not sure if that is Siren or not. But I think the drama was entitled for the villainess.

Ooku Tanjou? is that the one with Masato Sakai and the female shogun has a male harem. I seriously love Masato Sakai. He's my favorite j-drama actor

but I might be wrong, the synopsis is so familiar

I love Masato Sakai too, it's so refreshing to male harem in
Ooku Tanjou,
how he treats her and how they make the age gap seem convincing enough in a period drama, it's like seeing a concubine story but with male

0

Yes, it IS Saki. Thank you.

Fujiko isn't the name of the other one, though. The serial killer in the one I can't remember was a teenaged girl.

"Anime that does not have supernatural elements" - that's why I started watching anime, and then dramas, in the first place. My time has come! (just let me get my media notebook ?)

*Most of my favorites, have watched some 2 - 4 times*
- Special A (hypnosis is mentioned in episode 9 or 10)
- Toradora (first episode has a lot of swearing but then calms down)
- Anne of Green Gables: Anime
- Itazura na Kiss (been adapted by 5 countries including Kor "Playful Kiss" and 2 j-dramas)
- Say I Love You
- Kimi ni Todoke
- Lovely Complex (also been adapted to a Jmovie)
- Skip Beat
- One Week Friends
- Baby Steps
- Nodame Cantabile (I'm slowly watching the j-drama)
- Your Lie in April (someone mentioned it above, 2nding it) *On Netflix atm*
- Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun (plays off of Shojo tropes, good to have an understanding of Shojo)
- My Love Story

Currently watching
- Tanaka is Always Listless
- High School Fleet (all girl sailors)
- Haven't You Heard, I'm Sakamoto (a segment mentioned a ghost)
- Anne Happy/ Unhappy Go Lucky (about girls with bad luck, I don't consider it supernatural, but some might)

Sorry, it's so long. I hope the list helps. Best wishes with learning Japanese!

yeah... I think since there aren't many episodes out yet I will try... but my rusty brain to use and try and figure out the medical stuff and see if it makes any sense... maybe then the story will become clearer... because they are throwing so much info in each episode its like a blur...

Im terribly biased because of Jang Hyuk Oppa but I feel like he wouldn't have signed up for a terribly written drama, I think maybe the time crunch made it difficult for them to put it together and thats why we are so confused? I can hope right? right?? lol.

I've heard of Happy Marriage but haven't started since I haven't finished 99.9 Criminal lawyer, I need to find the time or just eat candy (the grape flavor)

Just you is cute and that's all I am going to say. The plot is not that convincing but Aaron and Puff Guo just looked so adorable and it just fun to see them together to overcome Aaron own law about office romance, hahaha

Just you was my introduction to the hotness that is Aaron Yan. And I really adore Puff Guo and him together.

I tried to watch his next drama Fall in Love with Me but I couldn't get past Tia Li's emotionless face despite everyone saying it was a great performance on Aaron's part.

I think I dropped FILME in the middle of it, I like Aaron but it seems like the story just not enough, it's cute but Just you is cuter and I agree that the female counterpart is a bit lacking,

many T-drama can be really cute and it's obvious that it's the goal,

again, I agree, Aaron is a hot mess , despite knowing him before, I just realize that he is really attractive lately

Fall in Love with Me was my first Asian drama ever. I loved Aaron in it--he was the only reason I finished watching the show. It started off really cute, but in the middle it became the most frustrating, illogical train wreck I have ever seen. Tia Li's blank stare was also very annoying. I like Aaron, he's a hottie and did well with the ridiculous story he was given, but I'm almost a little scared to try Just You because Fall in Love with Me scarred me for Taiwanese dramas, ha!

Oh do try Just You. It's MUCH better than FILWY. Puff Guo can act and the BTS scenes with her and aaron were cuter than the show. I actually shipped them to get together then. I still habour hope in a tiny part of my heart that they will get together in real life. Lol.

But yeah I can still hear Puff's voice calling out "Dean!" in that cute way of hers. Funny how they made his name same as his in real life. That show was my crack at one point.

I'm here! And my keyboard is fixed, though after a week, reaching for the v key instead of w was almost a reflex (it's also nice to be able to type the letter 'a' again, instead of copy-pasting it). And yeah, this week could have used some laughs too - it was Brexit last week, now those poor people in Istanbul. Our world has gone mad :(

If you're into jdramas, have you tried Hanzawa Naoki? It is AWESOME. Which is not the word that first comes to mind when one hears of its setting/main character's occupation (banker) but it's so so SO GOOD. And if you're into fantasy, definitely dry xxxHolic - it's based on one of my favourite mangas of all time and I had all manner of doubts beforehand about whether it was even possible to do justice to the manga, and it did it beautifully. The aesthetics are absolutely A++, which is incredible considering how stylised the xxxHolic manga was.

I feel you. I also travel a lot and have limited time to watch drama that's why jdorama suit me well, while I'm stuck only read recaps for kdrama.

Here's jdorama that gave me a good laugh:
- You said you've watched Date? have you watched the SP?
- Love Shuffle, the premise: relationship is based on compatibility so let's switch partner each week to test it. not your typical romcom, love the interaction between characters. I wish I have flatmate like them (their pajama party! and Tara-chan!)
-Okitegami Kyoko, it's '50 First Date' detective version. their so cute together. I'm not into Masaki Okada, but Yakusuke is sweet.
-Meitantei no Okite, a drama which make fun of detective drama. it's funny if you already familiar with typical japanese detective drama like Det.Conan or Kendaichi.
-Galileo, genius physic professor solving case. More like spent the whole drama to drool over Masaya.
-Hotaru no Hikari, the himono onna, woman who laid back at home. I can relate to her, except I don't have Fujiki Naohito in my office.
-Osen, japanese food porn! don't watch it with empty stomach. about a young woman (sweet Yu Aoi) who run a traditional japanese restaurant.

what I like about jdorama is when I have really limited drama time, I can watch watch their 20min tanpatsu or renzoku drama format, which is not only short in duration but also each eps stand on it's own so I don't need to watch all eps or watch in order. Often each eps has different story and cast so I can just watch eps with my favorite actor or actress.
Some recomendation:
-Propose Kyodai, 4 eps love story of men according to their birth order; 1st child (selfless), 2nd child (less confident), 3rd child (spoiled brat), and only child (has his own world).
-Ketsuekigata-betsu Onna ga Kekkon suru Hoho, propose kyodai female version but this time according to their bloodtype; A (reserved), B (arogant), O (happy-lucky-girl), and AB (sharp).
-Shinya Shukudo, 3 seasons, korea remade it as midnight dinner, heartwarming story about different restaurant costumer and nice tips&trick on some simple japanese dish.
-Loss Time Life, life drama about having second chance granted for death person.

Well, I watch more jdorama than kdrama so this list can go on. And mostly I prefer slice of live or dark theme drama since its jdorama forte.

Yes I agree the world has gone mad. Which is why I'm immersing myself in dramas, much happier, where usually the bad guy gets his just desserts and good triumphs over evil.

And I'm super frustrated because my local libraries don't have Wee Free Men! They only have the audio book ? I can't sit through 3 hours of someone reading it out loud. I just cannot. And I realise bookstores are a lot less common now and don't always have what you want. ?

OHYA finally ended, I did not enjoy the last 4 eps as much, I was just going through the motions watching, so it is quite a relief that it has ended. As for Beautiful Gong Shim, while the cute interactions between DT & GS are back with a vengeance in the last 2 eps, all that’s left is for Dan Tae’s real identity to be out in the open and for him to reclaim whatever he is entitled to. Of course how GS reacts to this when it is revealed to her, and will JS be able to conquer his complex emotions and be magnanimous enough to gracefully accept DT as family, will be crucial in determining whether the drama will make it or break it.

I’ve started to watch Dear My Friends and I never regretted it. I only realized it is a Noh Hee-kyung drama after watching it, I would have watched it much earlier if I had known earlier. The first NHJ drama I had watched is Did We Really Love? Though I did quite like the two leads, Bae Yong-joong (i.e Joon-Sang in WLS) and the young and pretty but slight chubby Kim Hye-Soo, what attracted me most were the wise and waggish conversations, the focus on “euri”, family obligations and friendships. All these could be felt in DMF, indeed, after watching all those rom-coms, I really relish DMF’s slice of life. So far, I’ve only finished 6 eps, I’m so infuriated by Park Wan as I do not quite understand why it is so hard for her to accept a wheelchair bound boyfriend given that they are so deeply in love? It is not like Yeon-ha could not take care of himself, and she is a freelancer who works from home anyway, it would be quite convenient for her to spend time with YH. So why does she jilted him and then went to act pathetic in-front of a married man and indulged in that half-hearted relationship in an attempt to forget about YH? Her behaviour is so exasperating to watch!!

Just want to talk about a scene in DMF in which an ajumma (Hee-ja) confessed to a pastor about being guilty of killing someone in a hit-and-run accident. The young pastor seemed at a loss about how to handle this matter, later on, he divulged it to another church regular ahjussi who happened to be a lawyer. I was wondering, what is the social obligation of a pastor? Is divulging a confession the right to do when it involves breaking the law?

I’ve also started to watch Doctors. I like the gutsy Park Shin-hye, though it took a while for me to get used to her fringe, it kind of looks weird on her. Her gangster like behaviour in high school is a stark contrast to her roles in previous projects. I think I will continue to watch this drama though I do not like watching medical dramas.

Have a great weekend all! :) 

Yum! Rich layered chocolate cake is perfect for me.. I don't mind the tears, it is really a very humane drama. Through it, I came to understand the mindset of the seniors, it also made me reflect on my behaviour towards my own mom when I was younger, I was quite inconsiderate at times just like Park Wan. How I wish I could be more affectionate towards her, like Hee-ja's filial son. It is through crying for the characters and shedding tears of regret that I recollect all the good things about my mom...

Side note: My Little Bride was my gateway into the world of Korean Dramas! I think I saw it in 2006 and after that I started watching every K-Movie I could get my hands on and Then I Moved on to DRAMAS! Has it really been ten years?

Oh you'll figure out in the later episodes why Park Wan is the way she is and why she made that decision. What I really love about DmF is the fact that nothing is as it seems and how extremely layered every single character is. The people I hated in one episode made me cry and feel sorry for them in the next, characters I didn't care for at all became a favorite... Sigh, the power of NHK's writing.

Re: Wan and her reasons why she left Yeon-ha will be revealed soon! I've always sympathized with the characters and learned not to hate them so much (yes, even Suk-gyun), and know that there are layers to them than presented. Noh Hee kyung's writing really shines through these veteran actors, and I learned to savor the moments of this drama as it unfolds.

The story will get heavier as the episodes go on, but I feel the show does a great job balancing the serious and the light and funny. I watched ep 13 last night and cried, prepping my tissues tonight for episode 14, and on Monday when the final episodes come out on DF.

Side note - It trips me out to see Jang Hyun-sung be this adorable on here, when he totally made me so upset and made me throw things in Signal (as Captain Kim Bum-joo). Also, how much do I love Choong-Nam (Yoon Yeo jung)? I screen-capped her smart-assery lines on my phone!

Thanks Angieya & Mashimomo for the heads-up, now I'm filled with much anticipation, will sure savor each and every new development in the drama. Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today!

To all of those in the U.S. have a great 4th of July on Monday!

Sighting of the week --- I saw a young guy totally dressed like Ahn Dan-tae, in capri sweats and flip-flops, while out shopping! It was quite interesting.

Watched this week:

Beautiful Gong-shim - I seriously love watching every single episode of this.

Master God of Noodle - So many twists and turns!

Entertainer - What happened to Ha-neul's brother is truly sad and tragic. Glad to see what happened in ep 16.

Beautiful Mind - Saw parts of the first 4 episodes. ....... I don't know though. While not awful, it didn't completely win me over.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

On God of Noodle - that is one of drama I was really disappointed. It just had too many people and plot moved too slow. Too bad because it had great actors and filmed nicely. I read Chun Jung-myung(Moo Myung) voiced his complaints (He wished the show to be half good as the original work) which I totally agree.

I'm hooked on to beautiful minds despite some very obvious flaws. Need Some improvements in writing and the female lead - and this could be a solid drama

I can't believe i'm saying it but i think i'm going to drop squad 38 - *wails* - the scam in episode 3 was so ridiculous that it had me rolling my eyes. I still can't seem to muster enough enthusiasm for Ep 4 despite SIG *wails again*

Doctors is .... Iffy .... i'll give it another week. Its got all these cute, swoony, sassy moments - but i'm not sure if they fit the situation. its too much of overt manipulation(?) of the viewer. *cough*DOTS*cough*

Really ? You are the first person (besides me) who has not sung praises of Empress Ki.

I watched it after healer (JCW - swoon!) ... but I dropped it midway.

Its so strange that i cannot get through 50 episodes of Kdramas. I have watched american tv that runs into 7-10 seasons

.. Tv in my country has shows running for like 1000 episodes! I think the longest running one we have is over 2500 episodes and still going strong. I stopped watching that rubbish years ago and lost my 'ability to persevere in times of adversity' with it :)

I'm still in disbelief that Empress Ki was so well-received because most of the time so little happens in each episode. I couldn't really take the politics seriously, but I wasn't convinced by the romance part either. SFD is different. There isn't a single filler episode, every small detail has a greater meaning in the grand scheme of things which will be revealed a few episodes later. I really think the writers are amazing. They know a 50-episode drama is long and some people may lose interest halfway through, so they make sure there is a major climax every 5 episodes or so eg epic battle, important earth-shattering revelations and so on. I was apprehensive of the length but in the end I got so hooked. Like what korfan says, it makes you dread the end of it because it's that good.

Lol..

Do you know.. India is almost the only country to follow this format for drama series..

otherwise everywhere else, its always about a fixed storyline

But then tv as a medium became strong only post 2000. Post the stabilization age, I think now all mediums are trying to get innovative.. with season concept and fixed story concept coming in..

Strangely before 2000 and the the ekta wave, there were actually very progressive shows ... post 2000, the production values shot up, the quality went down... After 3 months every show is interchangeable with the other following the same kitchen-politics storyline ... sadly, fixed storyline shows are not getting the ratings to herald a change

0

Well it's not your fault, Empress Ki certainly had many issues, flaws and plot holes. I watched it for JCW and HJW only. Didn't really care with the politics and other side issues.
IMO, EK started out great, but then after 20 eps it went downhill and never resurrected. Although the last couple of eps was slightly better than the middle part. Somehow through the midday it became repetitive.
I still enjoy watching the show and adore it, but the show is not without faults and you'd need patient and perseverance to finish it.

Jeong Do-jeon appeals more to the male viewers and history fans. Jung Hyun-Min knows how to write a political drama and tell it the way it is.
SFD appeals more to female audience. I was surprised that there were more historical events incorporated into the drama than Kim Young-Hyun's other sageuks.

Six Flying Dragons isn't up to par with the Jeong Do-jeon drama regarding history, but it isn't an empty drama and it offers far more than pretty boys and girls with swords (even though preatty boys and girls with swords are a nice bonus ;)). It is extremely rich in terms of political philosophy. And I'm not even talking about Jeong Do-jeons state theory but more about the fantastic description of political processes and relations between different types of political persons.

0

Kim Young-Hyun doesn't do authentic sageuks. It's a lot of work and research trying to keep it as close to the written history as possible.

SFD had more of the actual history with a bit of a twist than any of her other sageuks. Most were taken from the annals instead of her usual novel based story.
I think pairing up with Park makes it a bit easier to tap into the actual history more.

0

I personally love long dramas (if they're good) so I may not be the best person to comment, but I only made it through about 12 episodes of Empress Ki before the writing drove me nuts, and I absolutely loved Six Flying Dragons. It's not a light show, the political background is complicated, and there are a lot of characters to keep straight, but the script and ensemble cast are extraordinary.

I didn't make it through Empress Ki either. I already stopped at Episode 10. But I managed to watch Six Flying Dragons 3 times without skipping scenes... (At least without skipping many scenes. If I remember correctly the second time I saw it I left out parts from the first five episodes. In my opinion these episodes are the weakest episodes of the dama.)

With doctors I have the same/similar problem. I know that the "romantic" parts are supposed to be "romantic" but they just seem either weird or laughable or forced to me. And some of them just make me angry.

I also was able to finish Horse Doctor. I liked that one also. When I know that a drama is going to be 50 episodes long I understand that there may be some boring parts so I'm able to get through them and enjoy the rest of the show. Six Flying Dragons seems like a good one to try next.

Flower in Prison: I really do like this drama. It's a lot like a hangout-drama where you simply like hanging out with the characters and living in that world. After the heart-pounding Six Flying Dragon, I like this show's slow but deliberate pace. I do however have issues with the main character and with the actress playing her. Main character is -- to get all metaphoric-- a flower that is pretty in the background of the story' landscape and only blooms when she gets all badass. I suppose we're supposed to think of her as sweet quiet restrained power ever-lurking and ever-ready to strike out against evil but I just think of her as a character who links more important more interesting characters. Which leads me to the actress playing her. Oh my! I generally let inadequate acting go but this actress lack of expert skills doesn't help me feel any emotions for her. Her go-to emotion is to look perturbed. But really there are just so many perturbed looks one can take from the main actress in a 50 episode drama.

I love the villainess, though. Nan Jung is selfish, manipulative, in control..but when she cried because she became the new Revered Lady, I was touched.

Mirror of the Witch: Actually, there are lots of great female villains this season. I gotta praise the chief shamaness in Mirror of the Witch. Oh my gosh! So good! Although..this drama also has a weak main character. This time, the hero. I almost think the main male character is the chief priest's lovelorn son. He had more time on screen, does way more to push the plot ahead than Yoon Shin Yoon's character does. The writers should've worked that better.

Wanted: I'm liking this. So many of my fave actors in this. I don't quite "believe" the story but I'll work with it. Not sure if it's good or bad that I'm more interested in seeing heroine's ex-husband in the mix than I am in getting the kid back. The kid's a macguffin but the writers should've at least made us love him before they had him kidnapped. Glad to see good cops again. Not a traitor in sight.

Squad 38: Classy. Very like a movie. A stressful watch because I think that cop probably framed the parolee's dad.

To fellow Americans, have a great July 4th!

Carole -

Good to see you! Glad to hear you're doing better!

It appears many of us have been having the browser issues unfortunately. I finally figured out that I had to "disable" an add-on and this seemed to fix things.

I'm curious about Wanted. Not sure if I'll start watching it now or later though.

Have a great 4th of July also!

DB is difficult in all three of my browsers: Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome. And they have different add-ons. I do some workarounds. I'll see what I can do with removing add-ons. Basically I write my answer/responses in gmail then copy it to DB. Cause writing directly into DB is majorly difficult.

Wanted is high-octane fluff. So you'll feel distanced from the actress as she emotes all this "grief." I suspect it enjoys being cynical about media and society but it leaves me cold. I'd recommend watching it when you have nothing else to watch. I like the three male leads, and our villainous husband is so evil and our weaselly journalist so sleazy...that...I can't help but watch. Eh, it's a non-involving fun watch.

I've been tempted to watch Flower in Prison, but the lead actress has been preventing me from starting. She was dreadful in Gaksital, and reviews of her other projects haven't been good. Sorry to hear she's still so bad, especially given the length of the show.

yeah, she's pretty much on screen all the time. But the story is very organic -- for the most part, considering it's a kdrama. There's a good plot. It's a languid plot, not a lot of tension pushing you ahead. But some good action scenes, and you get to know and like the little prison community. It's really giving the viewer a feeling of living in a town and seeing daily life. With the occasional evil done by the Big Bad-ess.

The lead actress put me off for quite a while, but I am getting used to her and rather like her character...she's giving less "IDK what to do" looks and acting firmer. The rest of the cast is really good...I'm enjoying them and wish show was over so I could marathon.

I watched one and a half episodes of Wanted before I put it on hold because the dialogues feel a bit... off. It's unnatural. Real people don't talk like that.

And is it just me or is Kim Ah-joong's acting in Wanted a lot more superficial and emotionally detached compared to Punch?

The revelations and horrors come so fast that we're pretty much detached from every emotion. That's the major failing of the show: it's all excitement and no heart. But I like puzzles so am watching.

about Yoon Shi Yoons´ character: yeah he is kind of a wimp, but with everyone being so goddamn dramatic, a bit over the top and even corny kind of dramatic, his delivery of humor is so refreshing. Maybe he is there to do exactly that for the characters and for the drama: lighten the load.

I, on the other hand, can´t stand the shamaness. yes, she is played brilliantly. and it is not truthfully the fault of the actress nor the character. It is just that she enforces the sterotype of "women are witches, women are connected to dark powers" - you know, what I am saying? she is almost like some original Grimms´ fairy tale witch. I would like her to be more ambiguous. It was going in that direction at some point, then she was turned back to the Pure Evil path.

I don't mind YSY being light, though. I just feel he hasn't really been the main character even if he's the hero.

Yes she is stereotypical but that's okay, I think. She had a sad backstory but (as in several dramas) they don't tell us the villains' tragic backstory until it's a might too late. I like the whole Grimm fairy tale feel and her determination. Am glad it's ending soon, although I liked it. It was beginning to get repetitious. Now you've got the princess, now we've got the princess, now you've got the princess.

Not criticizing your taste in dramas, but I just don't get it. I'll agree that it started with a bang and much fanfare and was specracular but then it petered off... and then I couldn't stand it. Then it picked up... for all of two episodes. urgh.

I don't know what made it so good for me. Usually I don't like soapy "don't go in there! It's looks dangerous! Only a fool would go in there alone!!!!" type dramas.

Maybe it's because I wasn't watching anything else during part of its run. Maybe because I fell some of the actors. Maybe it's because I got hungry for noodles every arfing time I was watching it.

Who knows?
But I am invested in these people and I want to know how it turns out. (And, it had a lot of twists and turns I didn't see coming. I dislike watching shows I can predict what's going to happen.)

Happy Canada Day to all the Canadian beanies :D

I am enjoying Police Squad 38 , Doctorsand Wanted so far. Especially Police Squad 38, the last two episodes were wonderful!!
Lucky Romance is killing me with its cuteness overload. Ryu Junyeol needs to stop...(*whispers*please don't*whispers*).
I started watching Oh Haeyoung Again to see what all the hype was about now that it is over. So far I only seen 3 episodes and I like it. It is fresh and original (as far as romcom goes) so I can see why so many loved it.

Finally, since I could not decide which drama to watch after finishing N no Tame ni (which was AMAZING) and Amachan (which was cute), I started watching a French Canadian Drama called Jérémie. It's weird because FC Dramas never interested me so I was surprised that I am actually really enjoying this one.

It made me think how amazing it is that kdramas are popular and successful both domestically and internationally. People all over the world watches kdramas even though they are competing with American and British shows. FC dramas are only watched by French Canadians and even then I don't know many French Canadians that watches them...

happy weekend, despite the abundant of new Kdrama,
I just didn't have time to watch it,
instead, I finished

Watashi Kekkon Dekinainjanakute, Shinain Desu [JDrama] (2016) It's not that I can't marry, I don't want to :
it's a delightful watch about a successful plastic surgeon doctor who suddenly give a thought about married after finding out that her high school crush also a single at the reunion. it's about missing the destiny and how she try to appeal to man's eyes (she is giving the unreachable aura) by the help of the chef in her new favorite restaurant.

99.9 -Keiji Senmon Bengoshi [JDrama] (2016) 99.9 criminal lawyers ; another good drama about a criminal lawyer in corporate business, Matsu jun in a new light,

Planned to watch
- Heroine Disqualified
- My Love Story (Ore Monogatary)

I already finished the anime so I really want to see how the live action turn out. About the relationship pf a cute girl and a big guy in high school, imagine Gian and Shizuka type of pairing in term of look

So, is Watashi Kekkon Sekinaijanakute good? Despite my love for Fujiki I'm hesitate to watch it. I don't mind spoiler, so is it similiar with Last Cinderella or Kekkon Shinai? I hate the ending, the way they bow down their believe. I mean what's wrong with being single successful woman?! But it also has Miki, which amazing in Ghost Writer. So should I watch it? I need strong heroine just like her in Ghost Writer.
But the other reason I haven't watch it is because my love for Masaya is greater, so it's Love Song for me (I try not to watch to many drama live, prefer to marathon it, especially jdorama). Sadly, the rating is bad (Matsujun win this season, haven't watch 99, I stop watch Matsujun after Lucky Seven). It's not bad actually, I love the ending, it's appropriate. Partly because I can't stand Masaya romancing kids (Masaya, give me another Galileo or something similiar, or if romance pick your proper lady like in Meguri Ai or Bijou so I can cheer for you to get the girl).

I find it decently good,
and I really like the ending,
the start of her marriage blue is something I can understand since it's not because she is totally ashamed but it because her crush is also a single.
it also has the flashback with their moment in high school, telling us what went wrong at the time,

kinda let down by Lucky Seven when they shipped Eita out for couples of episodes, it changes many things in the show

ok, thanks sancheezy, I'll put it in my watch list. At least, if it turn out not like my expectation I hope Fujiki can make me finish it (just like what happen on Last Cinderella).

First eps of Lucky Seven is pretty good (those boxing scene is such a treat), but it goes downhill after Eita left. I heard that he had other comitment that's why he's missing in so many eps. I hope it's true instead of Jhonny ship him out for fear he'll outshine Matsujun (well, he did. in every scene he's in, I don't care what happen to Matsujun). Which is such a shame for a drama which reunite Matsujun with Matsushima Nanako. I love their banter as Tsukasa and Tsubaki in Hanadan. But here, what a pity, Nanako-san is wasted.

Lucy, I'm ho-oome! :) England was awesome, but I think I'm ready to be back in the natural groove of life... ie. work, dramas, sleep, rinse and repeat. ;) I didn't have tons of time to watch while in England... but it was occasionally too much for me and whaddaya know, some hotels have free wifi.

Entertainer: I'm on the last half of the last episode. It's killing me! I love it as much as ever, but I think I am ready to see it wrapped up nicely in a little bow (yes, I peeked at the recap. Just a little bit.)

MotW: Looking forward to catching up, I was so ticked when I found out who red cloak was.

Beautiful Gong-shim: Still so so funny, I love that you can tell as an audience that Dan-tae is wicked smart, but the show doesn't play it up tons.

Love Me if You Dare (C-drama): Holy cow, scary! I was fine up until he wanted HER to get on the murder machine block too... and then I had serious doubts about it sanity. Still loving it, just need time.

Speaking of which, I need to make the time to watch all the new shows that started!! I think I'm gonna watch Doctors and Beautiful Mind... and Police Unit 38... but Wanted sounds good too... Dangit I need a time turner. That's all, Happy Friday! Well, and a question.

Favorite all time drama would have to be the BBC's 1976 production of I, Claudius. Derek Jacobi and Sian Phillips deliver fantastic performances, Jacobi as the stuttering Claudius who plays up his affliction in order to stay alive and Phillips as the evil Livia, who, in order to promote her son, kills anyone in her way.

The production values are a bit antiquated by modern standards , however the acting is 1st rate.

Same here. All of Jane Austen's adaptations drama series and movies. I bought Bleak House because I love Gillian Anderson in it. Forget X-files ...she was super in BH. Carey Mulligan is one of fav too.
I have Amazing Grace too. I was crushing on Ioan Gruffudd but ended up impressed with Cumberbatch. I love the story, the song etc. It's a keeper, something to rewatch when I'm old and grey haha.

0

Have you seen Cumberbatch in The Last Enemy? It's so bleak but he's amazing in it.

I'd actually seen him first years ago playing a total creep in Atonement and when the Sherlock hype started, I wondered what kind of drugs people were on, that they found THAT sexy. My best friend had to practically drag me by the hair and tie me into a chair to get me to watch Sherlock, and let's just say, I caught on within five minutes exactly why everyone was swooning for that man. I swear he's never been more beautiful than he is as Sherlock S1, but The Last Enemy comes close.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiii 'm gonna swiiiiiiiiiing from the chandeliiiiiier, from the chandeliiiiiier.

Cumberbatch is Amaziiiiiiiing!

I did pogo and I agree with you :). He was brilliant in The Imitation Game too. I'm excited for Doctor Strange. I wish Nolan was directing it.

I'm really glad your friend made you watch Sherlock. It's such a great show and I love Martin Freeman too. I can not ask for a better Watson.
Kind of disappointed that we have to wait till next year for Season 4.

0

Amen to North and South (and Richard Armitage!!)...loved it so much, I actually bought the DVD. Long, but good...UK puts out some great period dramas. Another favorite is "Under The Greenwood Tree" (Thomas Hardy before he got so gloomy)...it's one of those movies you can watch no matter what your mood and the story is delightful. Actually, much better than the book.

Yes to Benedict Cumberbatch! Thank you for reminding me I need to watch Sherlock. It's been too long and I had forgotten about it for a bit.

The only dramas I have watched beside korean and my own country's are turkish and one j dorama. I have tried but could not get into american series because i do not like the tremendous seasons format. I want a show to end by max 25 episodes or it to be in a drama format not a series format with every episode offering different case which happens in mostly procedural/medical dramas.

As far as the bestshow is concerned i think i like turkish drama Muhtesem yuzyil the most. The acting is top notch. Though it is very long.

How are the dramas by BBC? Are they short? Could you recommend some?

the least episode of Western drama I watched and totally loved
BBC Sherlock , still on going 3 season, each 3 episode and 1 special episode make it total 10 episodes
Broadcurch, ITV 2 seasons, each sea son 8 episode, so total 16 episode
The Inbetweeners, E4
3 seasons, each 6 episodes so total 18 episodes

I never finished many western series since if they great, they keep going on and on until they aren't good anymore, happen to me from downtown abbey to misfits.

my impression is UK series tends to have many seasons but much shorter in the episode.

it kinda redundant with so many seasons since it seems like everything happens again with a different villain,
how I wished The Person of Interest and The Blacklist would end early but I still want to see the continuation
haven't watch breaking bad despite people mad review about it thought,

but I am not really fond of Mr. Robot kind of story, it's too slow for me, I appreciate it but it definitely not for me

thanks for the recommendation@wazp, @oshi, @EZ, waah that's a new list....

Ok so action but over with.

Leverage is a fun caper comedy. Very light and frothy under five seasons. Don't try for plot but it's a lot of fun.

You could try Archer if you don't mind animation. They have some of the best voice actors in the business with some friggin amazing comedy scripts.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a workplace comedy about NYC cops. It's less action more comedy.

How to Get Away with Murder is probably the most soapy death filled drama ever. The performances from Viola Davis make it worth watching.

Marvel's Agent Carter is fucking awesome and I am so mad it's over. In the same thread I really liked Jessica Jones and Daredevil (which was ok).

Penny Dreadful is completed and is a cool gothic thriller. American Horror Story is an anthology series with each season being a complete story. It's very campy and bloody.

If you're up for a little soapy fun action there is also the neat Quantico (i didn't continue to watch it live but it's finished it's first season). It's far from a genre changer but fun show with a Bollywood actress as lead.

Ray Donovan is the action show your mom wants to watch. Very old fashioned drama but hot lead.

Rectify is the shit. It's just awesome. Watch it.

Sense8 is a show about 6 people connected all over the world. It has multi racial cast and is considered very good. made by the same people who created the Matrix. It starts off a bit slow but the show was meant to be binge watched like a long movie. Ended up seat of your pants fun.

The Blacklist. James Spader goes after the bad guys who stole everyone's money and got away with it. I lost interest but is is a fun show.

The Comeback. Not an action show but probably the most well done piece of cringe comedy ever and I still love Lisa Kudrow. Bona fied gold.

There are plenty of other shows (I have a list of british ones but they are more crime nior thrillers). Just leave me a message if you want clarification or impressions on anything you pick.

@Oshi
thank you,
I've watch Sense8 (it's good, they should make the next season), then I love the blacklist, it just go on too long for my taste, still good

Love Penny Dreadful... The tale, the dorian gray and the undead is really good,

also watched HTGAWM, it's opening a whole new view from me,

so I think you picked a very fitting list for me, thanks ^^

Q. What’s your favorite drama not Korean and not from your country?

I think, if I had a favourite, it would probably be a tie between Buffy, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica (2003).

Especially the last of those three, my love for it is weird considering that even hearing certain of its OSTs on shuffle makes my face start to crumple into the beginnings of ugly crying - and in fact, it was the show that drove me to kdramas, where OTPs WILL be together at the end and deaths are threatened/foreshadowed way in advance.

Oh god BSG is the ultimate in modern sci fi done right. I wish more show's got the kind of script writers and money needed to make somethign like that. There is a part of me hoping the new Star Trek will be like that but it's Star trek.

There were many story turns and pieces of character treatment I was REALLY unhappy with in BSG by the end, but it's still one of the greatest shows of all time and has one of the greatest ensemble casts I've ever seen.

I still remember the week after the finale, I was so upset I couldn't eat or sleep properly for over a week afterwards.

Oh boy, I usually just lurk, but I'm so on board with Richard Armitage! I watched North and South right before starting with kdramas - I found them while searching for something I might like as well as that series on Netflix. (Have you seen him in Robin Hood? It's a goofy version, but he rocks the Sheriff of Nottingham in black leather and mane of glory!)

He was the reason why I watched that cheesy version of Robin Hood. I still prefer it over Kevin Costner's movie. Why didn't they hire one of the more talented British actors to play Robin? Argg dislike the movie and that stupid over played song by Brian Adams.
(Nothing against Brian, he is great musician).

What a wonderful question. I've always maintained that my favourite of all times were stuff like 17 Moments of Spring, La Piovra, First Among Equals, House of Cards (not the US, the BBC series). But in reality I've seen again and again Jane Eyre (the 1983 extended series with Timothy Dalton not the nonsense with Toby Stephens), Pride and Prejudice and of course North and South, like you Cozybooks.

Yeah, about Red Cloak, and then Heo Jun makes her realizes that the one she is loyal to isn't so loyal to her. Black magic in a one-way street... Still, Jeo Jun's methods seem too passive for the era not to mention for the crimes considering his own mother's demise and Seo-Ri's life at stake.

I will say that I like the dark fairy tale charm of the story, however, and I'm in love with Yo Gwang, Mr. Monk.

Yeah, last week I saw two murderesses get away with light sentences.

Game of Thrones: I was like..."Jon Snow, you kill a kid for attempting to kill an adult but you let Melisandre go after she admitted causing the actual death of a good little girl???"

Mirror of the Witch: Hero, you let the woman go who's been murdering people right and left including the gisaeng who had a crush on you???

I don't think people/writers/characters take death as seriously as they should in these shows. I was waiting to see someone weep for someone. Not even a tear from Sansa, Lady Olenna, or anyone in the palace for Rickon, Tommen, or Margery.

And that aid, let's hope HBO's new Westworld adaptation challenges our western ideas on death-as-entertainment. The original was such a slap to male self-gratification and pretty much made men look pathetic in their "play" and need for power and sex. Sady, I think the new one is going the "A.I. is interesting" route. Which means, no real social commentary on men, power, entertainment.

Q. What’s your favorite drama not Korean and not from your country?

This is very hard because I have 2.
#1 BBC Pride & Prejudice 1995 (Colin Firth version)
#2 Rumpole of the Bailey- I have all the seasons on DVD and I watch it from beginning to end once a year.

#3 is "Five Little Pigs" TV movie/episode of Agatha Christie's Poirot. The best one they ever did, in my opinion. I watch it once a year as well.

Though late to the conversation, just wanted to share...another fan here of Richard Armitage too. He's one of the main reasons I watched Spooks (aka MI-5) and Strike Back (besides the opening intro theme song "Short Change Hero" by The Heavy that really hooked me).

Favorite PBS and/or British tv projects:
A Dark Adapted Eye (1994)
Agatha Christie's Poirot (1989–2013)
Chef (1993–96)
I, Claudius (1976)
Keeping Up Appeareances (1990–1995)
Masterpiece Theatre (1971–2008)
Masterpiece Classic, Masterpiece Mystery, Masterpiece Contemporary (2008–Present)
Mr. Bean (1990–1995)
One Foot in the Grave (1990–2000)
Prime Suspect series and Helen Mirren (1991–2006)
Rumpole of the Bailey (1978–1992)

These are the ones that come to mind at the moment. I'm sure there are more that I've left off the list.

If you know Korean, please, help me! I'm translating 2011 drama "Ja Myung Go" from English to Italian, and a line isn't subbed (not on Viki, nor on Dramafever), so I have no idea what Park Min-young is saying. It's at the very end of episode 22, in the upcoming episodes preview (but the scene never showed up later).

I wonder what her secret is.. child's father can't be the secret.. she herself has told so many people.. I wonder if that's all to it..

In some interview, the PD mentioned that they are not focusing much on WHO did it.. but rather on.. WHAT he wants them to do .. so probably the reveal maynot be so exciting

And definitely, has to be or should be more than one person's effort.. or maybe like that chinese series.. love me if you dare.. the mastermind makes an entry quite late in the case.. e.g. in this case the chaeobol real dad (ex hubby)

Watched Mrs Cop 2 recently & was pleasantly surprised by it. It's light watching for when you need to detox from other more intense shows (ahem, Master of Noodles). Although I did like the first Mrs Cop series too, I think Mrs Cop 2 is faster paced & hence more interesting.

On OHYA, I fail to understand OHY/SHJ's behaviour especially in earlier episodes eg when she threw the rock breaking the window pane. How is she entitled to behave like that when they were not dating or in any relationship at that time? In addition her behaviour in the office & towards her boss is at times truly unprofessional albeit I understand some artistic/dramatic license is at play. While I'm sympathetic towards her having lived her school years under the shadow of the other OHY, her behaviour is oftentimes childish & irrational & inexcusable.
I am struggling to like PDK as well. I think he is vengeful & malicious based on his harsh revenge on his fiancée's purported boyfriend & hurtful comments to the other OHY. He's got serious issues - he likes women that he feels sorry for? How unhealthy is that?
I cannot but help think that everyone in this drama is in need of some serious therapy.

Another point on PDK I forgot to add - he's an obsessive perfectionist, not easy to live with which I why I think both OHYs should be running for the hills rather than competing for his affection.

I'll break this down into two parts:

Oh Hae Young:

You need to take contextual clues when you watch OHY's behavior especially her more extreme ones. She has just been dumped before her wedding day. Something which left her vulnerable and insecure not to mention highly unstable. Soon after that Other HY reappears in her life reopening all her old wounds and insecurities. This is a person who because of her experiences is prone to extreme behaviors when in pain (the massive amount of drinking, odd mood swings, it's why her parents were so worried). If you take all that into account you can see why she behaves so oddly in extreme ways. It doesn't justify but the drama never tries to. This is OHY. This is how she feels and acts when so deeply affected. The highs are high and the lows are low. She doesn't keep anything in. Hae Young is the 100 percent girl who goes all in just like she said she would on the bridge when she tries to let go of Tae Jin. The audience reaction that she needs to feel entitled to react in order to react is something that I disagree with. People don't need justification for feelings. Folks do dumb things when they feel bad. It happens all the time. Drama rules may not let heroes be just plain bad but this show doesn't agree.

Park Do-Kyung

I'll break his issues into three parts here:

Love:
He doesn't know how to do it. He just doesn't ever let himself love someone enough to be hurt. He's the classic kdrama trope but given real emotional grounding. This is exactly what a real person who doesn't know how to love someone would act. Pretty unappetizing no? The lucky thing is he meets someone who doesn't hold back and forces him to think about why he does.

Other Hae Young + DK
His relationship with the Other Hae Young was certainly badly structured. You're right that it was terrible that PDK didn't love Other HY as much as she loved him. No one claimed he was perfect. His relationship with his mother and other events (not sure if you watched far enough to know about some things) have left him him incredibly reserved. He went through the motions with her. Going from one relationship goal to the next without actually being open with her. The thing is though Other Hae young wasn't exactly being open either. She kept her mask of niceness firmly in place. Unwilling/unable to love him enough to get him to open up. It was a bad relationship all around. It's why it ended the way it did. She left him at the alter and he was angry but ask yourself did it really seem like either of them took the actions of people who were truly in love?

Dk and the REVENGENENCE

Keep in mind that from DK's perpective all he did was ask someone not to invest in his ex-fiancees new fiancees business. He had no clue what the consequences would be. At best he hoped to make a little mess and just screw with him. Is it petty? yep. Is it justified? Nope. Is it true to life? Yep. COntinued in part 2

reply

Required fields are marked *

Part 2

A large critique of Dk was that he felt unsympathetic because he did something so horrible. Except people missed the part where he spends the entire drama willingly taking responsibility for it. He suffers plenty of consequences and just takes it as his due. This isn't a crappy guy doing horrible things and profiting. This a very human person who did a petty thing that spiraled out of control. At one point he was willing to die to make up for it. Kdramas have trained people to expect comeuppances and redemption. Only problem is this show isn't going to offer any real redemption. Just consequences that have to be dealt with and people that need to move on.

On Everyone Needing Therapy:

Girl if we made a drinking game about the therapy needed by these people....everyone would be as drunk as OHY is the first half of this show.

As character,

plain OHY - I don't get her charm..

She is not a strong character and loves to blame others.. very very immature..

How can you go on blaming and hating and bad mouthing about someone who shares the same name..

And then viewers would bash pretty OHY.. since ep1 she gives no reason to be looked down upon..

Infact in comparison, I thinkpretty OHY is a much stronger, mature and disciplined well mannered character..

If it were real life... a grt guy is never going to fall for just OHY .. for her loudness, not putting in effort but just whining attitude ( clearly she could have put efforts in studying but no...even that is others fault.. if she is not famous.it is others fault)..

THe actress is nice.. but this character.. totally baffles me.. she is the heroine because well..she is supposed to be the heroine.. not because the story or anything else justifies it..

I gave up totally on OHY at around ep9. Fast forwarded last episode, but barely watched. The first 4 episodes were OK, but after that it just got super-meh. I second that too! It was initially rather enjoyable but the last 4 eps became unbearable, I started to get very irritated by OHY's clinginess and the coquettish way she acted when she was with DK. Luckily, the supporting characters, like Jin Sang, Soo-kyung and HY's parents were around to make it less intolerable.

@EZ @Ian @Carole @Windsun33
So I am not the only one who feels the way I do about OHYA - I did wonder 'cos it seemed to be receiving much love on DB. I haven't given up on it yet at this point but might do so if I continue to feel the urge to tell the characters onscreen to grow up.

0

Pretty OHY just put up a façade of being more mature. She was actually snarky, petty, and would backstab OHY many times. She just did all of that with a smile on her face which provided a distraction. Mind you, she wasn't evil just jealous and hurt as you will see if you decide to continue it. Every character had shades of gray to their personality and that made it interesting for me.

Required fields are marked *

Far from it..

How is she petty??? And when did she backstab OHY???

I am with you on every character, scrap that, every single being animal or human has shades of grey. Not arguing that.

But in comparison,
When did pretty OHY get jealous - when she realized that her love is with someone else now?? - How or why is this 'justified' jealousy worse than the absolutely 'random' jealousy portrayed by plain OHY all through her life??

Second lead is born pretty - so she should die because plain OHY doesn't feel as pretty in comprison???

Second lead studied well, put in her effort into academics..made a name and career for itself - But because plain OHY didn't - she shouldn't work in Korea or I don't know go hang herself..

Boys liked her more and not plain OHY - shoot.. pretty one at fault again..

Any 'negative' emotion displayed by otherwise calm and composed pretty OHY is vile/petty whatnot.. but obvious pathetic insecured unjustified behavior of just OHY is a candid blunt portrayal of her inner feelings..

:)

I am saying all of this from character's standpoint..

The second leads, anyday, were better characters. And male second lead.. got the bashing for nothing..

Also, just want to highlight or probably put it out there for discussion..

WHy is manipulation always looked down upon...??

Manipulating people is a very powerful skill and very difficult. Infact it is a much easier route to blurt it out or 'express' oneself all the time..

And manipulation does not necessarily means negative.. you may use to help others ( best example is lead female character in New Tales of Gisaeng)..

Good or bad, for selfish reasons or not.. its a skillset anyone would want to have...(use it whichever way they may want).. but not what everyone has or can have..

I think this whole concept of calling names or looking down upon folks who are good at manipulation or even sychophancy (not saying sychophancy = zero technical skills and the person has absolutely no knowledge of his / her work), or the gossips.. .. is uncalled for.

The indicator really should be if it is malicious and harmful and results in unwarranted betrayal.

0

I get that OHY likes to let her emotions out and known. I get why she's feeling certain ways. But her attitude also grated my nerves after a few episodes. I watched all episodes because I wanted to follow the story. But I could not stand her tantrums and clinginess. I actually found her disrespectful towards her parents at times. I know her mom loves her and wants the best, but I'm not sure if the mom let OHY free for the love of her daughter only, or if she just couldn't reason with her and thus, just gave up.

So far, I don't have any favourite actress but there are a few whose acting skills have impressed me.
I would appreciate it if any of you kind Beanies could furnish me with more information about the following dramas and the male/female leads :

God of Noodles is slow burn with lots of twists, conniving, and character work. GSY is decent in it with her character a charmingly brassy woman who works hard for what she wants. The show's biggest flaw is its central character Moo Myung, who is a rather flat and uninspiring hero. Still, I would say it's worth watching if you like shows that are a mix of emotions and thrill.

I think my pen-name is actually turning into my whole personality as I am completely and irrevocably obsessed with Korean dramas. This has now started affecting my life too. See for yourself:

Mon: Running Man

Tues- Wed: Doctors, beautiful Mind, OHY

Thu- Fri: Lucky Romance, Master God of Noodles, Entertainer(till last week at least)

Sat- Sun: Police Squad 38

Sun- Mon: Beautiful Gong Shim

Now, while 2 of these shows have ended, 2 more will start in their place and even though theoretically I know that I should not watch each and every show, I somehow can't stop myself.

Imagine, I go to work in the morning and come back and finish all these shows. I am also giving many competitive exams for better (government) job prospects. But where is the time to study! And it is almost always studies which are hurt.

Have you guys gone through this? Is there any practical way to cure it? Any motivation? Because nothing seems to be working.

And I know this is a very funny problem and I am laughing while typing this out, but I am actually seeking answers to it.

Oh my goodness! That's quite the lineup you have there. I think we should fault the dramaverse for putting out too many good shows at once. ;) I'm afraid I haven't found the cure yet, except maybe more work... but I don't suggest that, your exams sound like enough stress to me. :) Good luck!

hi ObsessedMuch! I believe that the universe takes care of kdrama watchers and all will be well for you. There will come a natural pattern of shows that bore you to free up your time followed by another period of good shows like the one now. You must simply surrender to the flow! I'm teasing but that actually is how it's worked out for me ?

Unfortunately I don't have an answer or solution as well since I'm also watching 8 currently airing dramas and it doesn't look like the number will decrease much when I look at the line up for the upcoming months. XD

lol..
dramas are my stress/ depression therapy..

And I go into zombie mode.. like no sleep and back to back dramas.. when not doing office work...

Ad typically takes 3 months before the mind automatically goes on a break and the addiction breaks.
But 2016 is crazy... I started binge watching (and I mean 12 hours daily)... in dec 2015.. and its july...

and late 2014 to early 2015 was such a lull.

Anyway to answer your question - nothing can help you.. watching moving talking pictures are wonderful distractions.. you gotta be tough !!!.. else the wonderful job gets to bear the brunt of it

Dramas are stress/ depression therapy but they might actually induce one to take another kinda therapy: de-addiction!

Anyway here is to trying to be tough!

I will start tomorrow. Okay day after. or the day after! :P

These days, having three adult rom-coms going on at the same time is a rare thing, so I have really been enjoying my weeks full of Beautiful Gong Shim, OHYA, and Lucky Romance. I'm wondering - what's slated to replace OHYA?

That ghost drama with Kim So-hyun. Which I'm not watching since my squick radar is tripped wayyyyy off by the prospect of a ~romance between a 17-year-old and someone pushing 30.

Happy Friday! Ready to enjoy long weekend? I am just happy to have one more day to watch drama. But first I know I will be teared up again watching final episodes of Dear my friend (checking if I have extra tissues). I am hoping and sure that next drama (Good Wife) won't be this emotional. Btw, one of the favorite scenes from watching last week? -In 'Flower in Prison', King Myung Jong and Ok-nyeo's moment totally reminded me of Sukjong and Dong-yi in 'Dong-yi'- more please. So cute~ Who is this Myungjong guy (actor) anyway?

There was the production press conference for 'Good wife' which is to air on 8th in TVN. As you guessed it, Jeon Do-yeon got all the attention.[The fact, Sports Seoul, Xsport news, OSEN]
About casting Jeon Do-yeon, PD Lee Jong-hyo (who did Cruel city, I need Romance, Witch's romance, etc.) said "When we made the decision to do a remake of 'Good wife', everyone mentioned Jeon Do-yeon as the female lead. There was 'Will she do it' doubt, but I thought I'd just try and gave the scenario with no expectation. I was shocked when I heard she accepted it. I even thought 'Why she took it?' She said that script was very fun and wanted to do. Working together with her itself feels like a dream and I still can't believe it. When I thought about the female character for the first time, Jeon Do-yeon sunbae was perfect fit, so the writer made her name Kim Hye-kyung the character Jeon played in her movie 'The Shameless'(2015)."

Jeon Do-yeon's last drama was 'Lovers in Prague' 11 years ago. "When people talk about me returning after 11 years, I feel like I am an actress who've worked too long. Set environment has been changed. I am trying to adjust, thinking this is my debut. I started shooting end of April, and now I grew used to. Even though it is hard, I am adapting better because set atmosphere is good. I have played characters who are difficult to understand emotionally so far unintentionally, rather than doing a drama which is easier to follow. So I have worried in that area continuously. Still I didn't pick 'Good wife' for a change I needed. I am an actress who started out doing a drama, and I wanted to do anything interesting regardless of its genre. I wanted to do a fun project rather than serious or heavy, and 'Good wife' was a good fit. I tend to read the scenario attracted by its emotional side, but 'Good wife' was the first project which story moved following the situation, rather than person's emotions. I was attracted to its story and dramatic situation which was unique in 'Good wife' which caught my eye." About the name, Jeon said "I didn't know my character's name at first. I found out her name was Kim Hye-kyung later, and when I asked, director said 'Jeon Do-yeon will surely turn down this project, so we might be able to use that name."

About her character, Jeon said "I know how difficult it is to keep the balance. Kim Hye-kyung in the drama looks like a character who is emotional and behaves on instinct rather than being rational. I am like that too. It is fun to follow KHK and search the similar traits, even though I can't say we are similar too much. It will be fun to compare with the original show, but different part will be fun too. 'Good wife' is new challenge for me. In genre, character, occupation all. I will work hard."
She said she's worried about the amount of her lines and legal terms. "I wondered if I could memorize them all and express well. Director even said he could write on the board and I could memorize. That was my biggest worry but now I am getting used to it a little by little. In Memorization and in body strength."

Yoo Ji-tae(Healer) was also happy about working with Jeon. "Working with good actors lends good influence on your acting life. When I heard JDY joined in this drama, I wanted to have honor to work with the best actress whom I wanted to meet once, so I took on this project. Also I have trust on TVN because other people praise a lot and say they are making many good dramas." About the show, he said,
"I didn't feel pressured because of the American show. I have no doubt 'Good wife' will be good drama with outstanding degree of completeness." Yoon Gae-sang(Last, Best love) also said "When you work with good actors as a team, you learn a lot as an actor and get to think about the path you have to take. I loved to work with JDY, I liked Yoo Ji-tae was in. And I liked PD Lee Jong-hyo's previous works so I wanted to work with him." Lee Won-geun(Sassy go go) said "Only if I can show in one same cut with Jeon Do-yeon sunbae."

Kim Seo-hung(Assembly, Empress Ki) is fan of the original show. She said she usually watches genre which has woman power. "Diane of the original is the character I play. She will be a little different since the show has to fit into Korean sentiment. I brought the source that I can use in from watching the original show, and put into consideration for my acting. I don't know how it will look on the screen though."

Nana (who will play JDY's help) said Jeon Do-yeon was her acting teacher. "Acting with great sunbae-nims, I feel very honored and happy. It is my honor only to be here with Jeon sunbae here. She is best teacher. I was very nervous and felt burdened, but she treated me kindly. On the set because of lack of experience, there are parts I miss and get confused, but sunbae explains to me in detail. On the stage I have to work according to the given concept, so I can't show myself as I am, and I am very different from the image I show on the stage. Set atmosphere is best. I am shooting very hard learning from sunbae-nims." She Asked others "How is my personality?" and Jeon said "She is the one I meet the most these days. I thought she was sexy and cute, but actually she is warm and nice."

JDY said "When director said 'How about Nana?' I was shocked. I heard she had no acting experience, but I was thinking I was debuting after 11 years too, so we did the first shooting shaking. Nana must have felt pressured and nervous on the set, but she is a friend who gives me lots of energy. She is doing so well that even though I am sunbae, rather than giving her advice, we are working together comforting each other."

PD Lee talked about the drama. "The original American show is famous and well-made. So I feel burdened to be compared. We modified to fit into Korean setting with consideration of Koreans' sentiment and circumstances, but main lead characters are similar to the original. Some parts were brought in as they were from the original, and some were changed to fit into real situation. And even though we used the script as the base, we took actors' feeling and interpretation in on the set. We can't avoid being compared and that is the fate of remake. We brought the main frame in, but characters in that frame are a little different, so it will be good to see comparing."

He said the difference was that the show put focus on Kim Hye-kyung character. "If you thought the point was 'What does that female lead think' watching original, in the remake we made her to express 'she is thinking this' clearly. KHK character follows her emotions rather than being logical and detailed in solving a problem. The charm of the original show was to make you ponder on 'if good wife is really good?', but we haven't decided on the ending. Still we have the baseline that we will not tell a cliché story about how to become a good wife, or lecture that you have to be a good person. It could have a little different ending from the original, or could be similar."

I feel sorry for Nana for all the pressure and nervousness, but how lucky is she? How she got the job any way with no experience?????

Such an amazing actress Jeon Do-yeon <3. I was marathoning Song Kang Ho's movies a few years back and came across "Secret Sunshine" with Jeon as the lead actress. I didn't think anyone would hold a candle to Song Kang Ho but she did and more. Playing emotionally complicated characters separated her from the rest.

Jeon Do-yeon is probably the first Asian actress to win the best actress award in Cannes. Big honor for her and Korea.

I was shocked together with PD Lee Jong-hyo that she agreed to take the leading role. Might as well watch the heck out of it cause she might not do this again.

There was also a production press conference for 'Bring it on, ghost' (to air after OHYA).[The fact, Xsports news]
PD Park Joon-hwa said the show would consist of various genre. "Original webtoon is very good. Production team put in lots of thought not to disappoint fans of the webtoon. There have been scary chilling dramas before, but our drama's basic color is sunniness. There are comical and bright parts. In addition, there are chilling and melo parts. It is combination of various genre, and we will try to portray that well in the drama."

About the casting, he said "The common traits of actors in our drama are being innocent/nice. and have visual/good looks. Their looks fit to their characters. Taek-yeon especially, I think, has actual image similar to Bong Pal(character he plays). Previous characters Taek-yeon ssi has played might had dark side, but this time he will show the character his real self is naturally reflected. As for Kim So-hyun, my goal is for her to reborn as woman from a girl through this drama."

Ok Taek-yeon said he'd work extra hard. "I think this might be my last project before I go to do my army duty next year, so I will even work harder with the sense of responsibility. Actually I am very scared of ghosts. So I can't even look at the people who wore the ghost make-up on the shooting." There are action scenes with Kim So-Hyun. "So-hyun ssi is doing action scenes better than I expected, so we are shooting easily. I am trying to make the show to be lively."

Kim So-hyun said about action scenes. "I practice hard because it is my first time to film action scenes. I am usually afraid of ghosts, but also have lots of curiosity so I have high expectation on this drama. I once had rem paralysis while shooting for the first time in my life. It was very scary to get paralyzed but I think that is indication for this drama to become DaeBak since this is ghost drama."

Kwon Ryul said "Rather than concerning about if I believe the ghost or not, I feel there is something philosophical. We will try to make the show feel relatable by reflecting the reality even in this supernatural situation... We will try to make the drama to blow the summer heat away. Set environment is hot and difficult, but it will be nice if viewers can have fun watching the show."

About the ratings, PD Park said he hoped for half of OHYA ratings. "The reason I watched OHYA with interest was because female lead was Seo Hyun-jin who worked with me in 'Let's eat 2'. Since then we've been on close terms, and I expected the show would have good ratings, but had no idea it would be that good. I hope we can receive even half of her good energy, and I will be happy if we can get half of OHYA ratings. Since our show belongs to its own genre, I think there are good and bad points. The viewers might feel scary on the parts ghosts are portrayed, so we focus on production to have mixture of various genre that it can eliminate the scary feeling part. Not everthing is bad about a ghost. There are kind ghosts, and if there are evil ghosts, Kim So-hyun and Ok Taek-yeon can beat them, which will be able to provide refreshing feeling. Apart from ratings, I hope this drama can be remembered as well-made project on its representation, story and completeness."

For ratings promise, Kim So-hyun said (since PD Park said half of OHYA's which is 5%) "if we get that rating, I will fight with Ok Taek-yeon at Gangnam station". Ok pouted "You are the only one hitting, aren't you", and Kim said "Oppa can hit me too." So they said they'd reenact the fighting scene in their costumes from the drama at Gangnam station.

Does this mean we will see Taek-yeon like him from Na PD's variety show - goofy not cool? That will be good!
Combination of various genre? Hope not another 'Lucky romance' where Ryu Joon-yeol is doing comedy and Hwang Jung-eum is doing a melo. I don't know where the plot went in that drama. I thought it would be like 'Oh my ghostness' sigh. (Still RJY acting is pleasure to watch)

Also sorry that I didn't have time to translate interviews of OHYA casts including Seo Hyun-jin and Eric. But I am sure you will see them in some other site.

Jo Jin-woong who stole our hearts in 'Signal' got into spotlight again with the movie 'The Hunt' which opened in the theater on 29th (as No1 in ticket sales). He is currently filming TVN drama 'Entourage'. JJW is indeed busy guy -he was detective Lee Jae-han in 'Signal' where he earned the nick 'Ajae Fatale', he was a pervert old man in the movie 'Agassi', and he was a corrupted policeman in 'The Hunt'.

About the question how he shows new side of him every time, Jo said "I think the project has to be fun first. Character seems to change according to the project. Actually Jo Jin-woong is one person, thus there is limit how much he can change. Would voice change? Would face change? or personality change? It won't change much. One thing for sure is that there is no director who asks me to act exactly like the character I played in my previous projects. It is different with every project. I think new character is created through communication with the director. But I still worry in many ways. How should I make my face expression? How do I act? I have to lose weight, but if I can't, should I just cut some off - I even think that. But since I can't go that far, I worry how I can appear differently from the character I played previously at least."

He played villain character of a corrupt detective in 'The Hunt'. "Ahn Sung-gi sunbae-nim's energy is amazing. When people reach around that age, they wouldn't want to do such difficult movie, but he always arrived at the set first and prepared, When I ask "Don't you have hard time?" he says "No, It is so fun." We filmed in the mountain continuously, and when we took a rest, he was digging (bonnet bellflower) roots in the other mountain by himself. It was amazing. Son Hyun-joo(The chaser, Signal) hyung was in only about 5 scenes as cameo/friendship appearance, but he said he would buy a meal on the set. So I said "Even the lead doesn't do anything, why cameo does that?" Ahn Sung-gi sunbae and Son Hyun-joo hyung have similar personality. Wherever they go, they never say anything bad. They are really good people."

The one act he has not done so far is traditional melo. When he was stage-playing during his college days, he found that because of his big structure and burly looks, he could never play 'Romeo' in 'Romeo and Juliet'. He said he gave up doing any melo. He didn't have hobby to watch melo movie or shoot one until he watched the movie 'Leon' and 'You are my destiny'. "Actually until only a few years ago, if someone asked me about doing melo acting, I said "Is there such a brave director who can ask that to me?" But I realized that is not the case. Recently after watching the movie 'Leon'(Léon/The Professional, 1994) I thought about the melo genre again. I thought if I do a melo, it will be huge challenge or task for me. More than the concern about if I should do a melo or not, I thought I should prepare with determination. I wondered melo is some task I should do at least once. I sobbed watching 'You are my destiny'(with Jun Do-yeon). I think it is amazing to make the audience feel emotional like that. If there is chance to do a project with such strong depth, I have no reason to pass it."

Jo couldn't go to the honeymoon after his wedding because he was filming 'the Roaring current' at that time in 2013. "I had the wedding in 2013 but couldn't go to the honeymoon. So every anniversary I have been telling my wife that we will take a trip, but we've never been able to. Last year I made reservation to go to Hawaii during our anniversary in November, but I ended up doing 'Signal' so I cancelled the trip. I didn't plan to do 'Signal' at all, but PD came to my house and while talking, 'FEEL' came to me so I decided. So I canceled the Hawaii trip. If we didn't go to Hawaii in March this year, I might have gotten divorce from her. (laugh). My wife is Budda. I think she will have many 'Sari' later (refers to pearl-like bead-shaped objects that are found among the cremated ashes of Buddhist spiritual masters. People joke it is due to no sex in life.) I am sensitive and have to settle the matter once we argue, but she is not like that. I am thankful she has different personality."

Currently he is busy shooting TVN's 'Entourage'. He plays the CEO of an entertainment agency. "Maybe because 'Entourage' does not involve murder, the set atmosphere is bright and cheerful so I am shooting having fun. The character I play talks continuously, having fun and enjoying his life, so I like it. It is not easy to meet a character I can enjoy in a project. I am happy because there are many lines that I can play with. While I was reading the script at home, I even thought 'I want to go to the set now'."

btw I think he can do melo - he showed his potential in Signal, don't you think?
Now I am excited for the show 'Entourage' (and many awesome cameos including Ha Jung-woo).

in movie). Glad Ajae get to shine finally.

Another actor in 'The Hunt' along with Jo Jin-woong is Han Yae-ri(Chuk Sa-kwang of Six Flying Dragons).
She plays a girl who lacks, who lost her father due to a mining accident. "I really put down myself. I did my acting thinking 'I am 10 years old, 10 years old. If you ask me do it again, I might not be able to do it. Haha. I think it is good that I did before I get older. She is lacking emotionally, but I tried to show healthy, pure and innocent side rather than more stupidity. It was even more difficult to act because of GwangWan province accent/saturi. I felt like I was learning another language."
The reason she took the project was because of Ahn Sung-gi who has nickname 'People's actor/national actor'. "You never know when you will have this kind of chance again. I thought I had to do this no matter what. Thanks to that, I have learned a lot. He(ASG) must know what to do right away, but he waited for PD and staffs to find their path with their own ways. I had so much admiration. Since sunbae-nim was waiting, other staffs and actors were waiting naturally. The way he was patient and endured was amazing. And he did not give out any indication that it was hard on him, he always smiled."

She debuted appearing in short scenes in movie 'Shadow'(2007). "In the beginning I mostly showed girl's image, but now there are more offers to emphasize my feminine side. I think 'HaeMoo/Sea Fog'(2014) was the turning point. It seems that I gain more later than when I film a movie. I'd like to play any character which I haven't played."

She said she gained mid-age male fans ever since she appeared in the drama Six Flying Dragons. She said "Usually people don't recognize me so I walk around comfortably. But around the time SFD was finished, when I went to a restaurant, some ajussi recognized me. I was amazed because they kept staring at me when I was grilling the meat. Since men watch martial arts, many seemed to watch the drama. It looked that people were happy to watch something they saw in the book in the drama."

About her being called as 'MuSsang nyeo/No double-eyelids woman', she said she noticed the people's view of the beauty had changed. "I think personal taste changes. Since it means someone likes how my face looks, I am thankful for that. It is so nice that good actresses like Kim Go-eun and Park So-dam settle in big. And I am happy because I feel that I attributed a little to that change (in perspective) and did my share. I think it is nice because there will be more scenario for actress once there are more actresses."
She smiled all the way during the interview. She said it was due to the fact she feels more ease in her mind. "I used to be serious and took as real even when people joke.. I realized life doesn't change significantly by one event. Whatever it is, it is built by accumulation of things a little by little. So I thought I could choose a project with ease in my mind now. Before I was very cautious and no fun. Even meeting the report-nim, I feel much more comfortable now."
At the end, she said she wants to hear "Her spectrum widened" as actress. "I wish I could be an actress who can digest various characters. So someday I wish I could become an actress who belongs to 10 best in Korea like Ahn Sung-gi sunbae-nim."

Yay for HYR! Can't wait for her drama 'Age of Youth'. July 22 come faster~

Happy Friday, everyone! I finally got my keyboard fixed, my v key got a major vorkout last week and even now, I find myself sometimes reaching for the v when the letter that should actually be in the word I'm typing is w.

I'm down to one drama a week now, and right now that's Police Unit 38 - which is SO GOOD, it's one of those dramas that has me praying it'll stay that good all the way through. Ma Dong-seok is so perfect as the long-suffering everyman, I actually wish his crazy scheme would succeed so he wouldn't have to snick car keys from his wife anymore. And a painful bureaucratic death on everyone making his life so hard, the poor man's just trying to do his job!

And Seo In-gook....I'm still half amazed he only began acting four years ago - how is he this good? I also love Sooyoung, she easily holds her own and her chemistry with SIG is kind of fantastic - I think this is the first time I've seen her paired with an actor close to her in age instead of 15-20 years older.

I really wish veteran character actors like Ma Dong-seok and Yoo Dong-geun got to lead more dramas, instead of the roles of 'lead' being limited to younger (and usually mediocre/terrible) actors only and things being decided on the basis of looks and popularity the way they are now - yes, we get some great talents among that crap but that's more a matter of luck than actual attention paid to acting skills.

I think , more often than not.. its not the case of casting good looking young actors.. but rather a case of what the drama demands..

Most of the genres require an attractive face...and lets admit it.. drooling and swooning has a lot to do with how one looks (yes one can be a fab actor with a grt personality capable of endearing a character.. but fat chance if he is ugly he will be able to pull it off)..

Take thrillers on the other hand, they usualy have what we would call.. great actors..

Its always abt the objective...

Where acting can be compromised because fluff is more important..

or if young face is required over old..

E.g. 50 shades thing.. casting team felt this other actor would be perfect for the role.. but he was really not appealing and there was so much uproar about it.. and then they cast a good looking although younger than character actor..

And the you have actors like Lee min ho.. who are not good looking per se.. but are such amazing actors that you can't help fall for them

'Drooling and swooning' material has far less chance of making a good, watchable drama than someone who might not be as photogenic but is far better at acting and doesn't distract the viewer with their lack of ability to convincingly play a a scene.

Choosing looks over skill every time because ~the genre demands it~ is the drama equivalent always choosing to colour in a picture with kiddy colour pencils instead of rich, vibrant oil paint.

0

Also, Lee Min-ho is not the example I'd choose for actors who are "not good-looking" but "amazing actors", js.

0

@Pogo,

LMH - for me he is :)

However, on the drooling-swooning part... I never said acting is always compromised..
But there is a reason why leads like your detective in signal, or in 38 can not be leads of a romcom.. unless it is a rom com set for a character that is them - their age bracket, normal man..

The specific case that you called out - about casting younger folks... I meant it in above stated context..

However, yes you are right that acting is a talent and that trumps most of the factors..because a good actor more often than not will be able to sell the role and make it interesting..

BUt then there is a shallow side to the audience.. which is century old..
pretty things are attractive and they sell.. so sellers sell..

0

But that's dramaland though. Training ground for idols and pretty faces with barely any talents. I don't see it changing in the near future.

The real talents are the ones ruling Chungmuro.

I love the attentions that the film actor ahjussi(s) are getting in dramaland.
Jo Jin Woong and Ma Dong-seok have been doing dramas here and there when they were not in a movie project but never really got this much love from drama fans before.

I think they are more familiar with Choi Min-soo, Kim Myung-min, Ryoo Seung-ryong, Kim Young-cheol, Lee Seong-min etc (at least in Korea).

Son Hyun-Joo and Shin Ha-gyun needs some more loving in dramaland dang it. They are really amazing.

I hope Yoon Je-Moon did not screw up his career after that DUI or whatever it was.

Anyway, I hope there is more Oh Man-Seok (detective) scenes. He is so underrated.

I'm rooting for Unit 38 to beat Bad Guys' rating.

Hi pogo,

I guess I'm shamelessly plugg my site, but I've picked up 38 Task Force for recapping and it's crazy but fun to try and sum up the scam-scam. Seo In Guk is a natural as a con artist, is that a good thing? :) Anyhoot, a couple of things that are in the background but I wonder if they will play a significant part: the two Baek Sung Ils in the department and will our Sung Il get his $5000 back? The two names, ha - like Another Miss Oh - is this a new kdrama trope? Hope to catch up on all the episodes this weekend :)

Happy Friday and happy long weekend for some people!

I have a lovely 4 days weekend coming up and I will spend it watching the last 4 episodes of OHYA with my mom. I am loving the show but the last few episodes have slowed down the show for me. I loved the quirky humor that was in the beginning. I am still really liking the show but not quite as much. But I must add I love Seo Hyun-Jin and Ye Ji-Won. They make the show for me. Here is hoping it ends well!

After that I plan to watch Mirror of the Witch that I am super excited to watch. I love fantasy shows and it seems like this one does an excellent job.

I am currently watching Three Musketeers on my own and I'm really enjoying it. I am on episode 6 but it is a very well done, slick drama. I love how the show combines history with the fictional Three Musketeers story. Very well written, but that's not surprising since it's written by the very talented Song Jae-Jung (Nine, Queen In-Hyeon's Man). Plus, it has the super hot Lee Jin-Wook in it.

I do find it funny that the 2 shows I am watching has Seo Hyun-Jin. Both these shows are the first time I've seen her in anything and by accident I end up watching 2 of her shows at once (I didn't know she was in the Three Musketeers). But I am in love with her.

Blame the extension. They added to much angst and broke momentum. It's still fun though and ends well.

Ya, I was hoping that since they got the extension pretty early on that they would have been able to keep the momentum going. Doesn't seem to have been the case. It has still been very enjoyable but I now wish they had kept the show at 16 episodes.

I LOVED Three Musketeers, it's great all the way through. However, I don't think I'll ever get over that they completely dropped the original idea of a 3 season kdrama like a lead balloon. Why kdramaland, why?

Ratings for Season 1 weren't high enough to justify a season 2, and sageuks are expensive to produce.

Re: Cultural Insights into Oh Hae Young..
which may help with understanding other dramas this season, including MW, LR, BGS and the upcoming Let's Fight Ghosts.

1. Mugyo (Native term)/Muism (English term)

A native Korean religion that once was getting close to get systematized before the Korean men turned chicken and hated that Korean women had control of the spiritual realm as much as they did. (i.e. 50/50) (I'm making fun of Korean history as a Korean.)

Mugyo views time as squishy and non-linear. Later it views time as circular.

Mugyo also treats death as not such a bad thing, but one needs to help resolve anger a ghost may have and a ghost only turns evil after a given period.

Mugyo also views the non physical world as timeless. So that the two souls... one is always timeless and travels through dreams. The other one is the physical soul.

Mugyo is also very much connected to nature and the natural world. (You may recognize elements of this from other dramas.) Many Kkut (rituals) are held out in nature.

Mugyo is animistic. Everything has a soul. Such as a house, trees, animals, etc.

Hanbooks has 2 books (if you want to buy info in English) and wikipedia has some really good resources.

2. Kishōtenketsu (Japanese term for it and the easiest way to find it)
http://stilleatingoranges.tumblr.com/post/25153960313/the-significance-of-plot-without-conflict

This one has the best explanation for this plot structure. It's originally Chinese Japanese AND Korean, despite the Japanese name... I couldn't find an article with the Korean term. A lot of the highly hated dramas on dramabeans run this flavor. Warm and Cozy, Big, Another Oh Hae Yeong, all of Kim Eun Seok's work, etc.

3. Dream Record

In basics (though reading the thing is better) It's recalling your life through death. It became popular with the book Dream of Nine Clouds. Though he wasn't dead, there was still an element of that. Unyongjun (EonYeongJeon in revised) is another version of that... and also has info about Palace Ladies, that I think people would love reading if they are into Sageuk.

You can find a more detailed explanation under "Dream Record Korean story" first Google Books hit. (Link is long)

4. Nunchi. lit. eye measure.

The ability to read a situation based on body language, what has been said so far and read the under dialogue, guess future actions based on the given situation and people and then come up with the best resolution. It's part of Korean socialization and required in Korean culture. That's why for many people outside of ROK, the story seems to jump inexplicably. It's working highly on the viewer's ability to perceive and intuit. Also why the Hong Sisters (funny ones) are hated in ROK before Big and Kim Eun Sook is loved.

There was a sound effect for nunchi in BGS for ADT at the end of ep 13. (close up of his eyes.)

I hope this helps people understand stories better from a Korean perspective...

This is very helpful!

I knew I was missing a lo of subtext because any high context society will produce a lot of mutli layered artistic works.

This is why the USA is considered shallow.

Yeah, lots of US plotting is super shallow in the Big Box office work. It produces lazy viewers a lot of the time because it never challenges the person to think. Often explanations are handed on a silver platter 3 times over and sometimes readers and viewers *still* don't get it.

It's also heavily event-reliant, despite what the US tends to think of itself. (Which is kinda a twist.) The US tends to harp on interesting characters and character-based plots, but Kishōtenketsu, which is super hated in the US is the ultimate in character study. Because there are no bangs in the events it allows a lot closer study of characters and to change say, one thing about each of the characters, thus delving deep into them and creating a much more realistic feel.

I also find the reliance on three act structure in US plotting dull. I wish there was more mixing in of other plot structures, but it's often thought to be the only correct one. Usually when something is going wrong. I pause it and go, "Yep, 2/3rds of the way through *yawn* the denouement should be after that."

Occasionally, the US does come out with challenging work, say Being John Malcovich, but then those types of movies tend to be heavily drug-influenced and are considered indie, not mainstream like they are in Korea. (Say Bungee Jumping of Their Own and Il Mare both played to main box offices and major studios. They are both very challenging films from a US PoV, and the US version of Il Mare, Lake House was thoroughly hated.... but if you stop with the linear timeline thought, go branching/string theory, turn on your brain to think it through, it works a lot better.)

BTW, I've said this before to White Americans who found a lot of this insulting, but I think you would understand better if you watch more worldwide media how lazy American media can be, even UK media isn't this bad... if you struggle with the so-called intuitive jumps, there you go.

I also tend to see a lot more experimentation in Korea, Japan and somewhat in China towards plot structures. I know this as an insider, but the US has pretty much quit experimenting as much and I'm super disappointed.

It's because US media tends to be for mass consumption on a multi cultural layer. In some ways that is good because you can produce works that can convey a lot of poignant messages that reach a bevy of people.

It's difficult to achieve that with stories that mess with structure because both linguistically/culturally/socially the US is geared to be very fluid and open. There isn't a lot of subtext in society. It's why things like Mad Men are so lauded. Anything that allows for deeper slower nuanced studies of people excite everyone because it's not found in life. That isn't true of every culture. The problem is high context/subtext cultures require a level of knowledge not everyone has to just begin to parse whats being shown. The barrier is hard to get past which is why structurally the 3 act drama sticks.

There are notes that because of the popularity of Casablanca and probably Aristotle overall (who, BTW, was a sexist donkey). That the US stopped experimenting. But if you look at turn of the century literature,l there was a lot more experimentation, especially around WWI.

This fell to the wayside later during the influx of probably the pulp fiction era and probably movies...

So it's not that the US is unable, though I do think the socialization plays a role, it's that the US after popularization of media as a popular consumable became lazy and wanted a mass market, as you noted. I kinda was hoping globalization would help reverse that, but it seems more like the US through its media is imposing that the three act structure is the "correct" one, which for me, makes me cry. US movies in some ways are spreading prejudice as well as killing off some of the ways to tell stories.

I see its influence very much in the easier to consume Korean dramas.

0

The nice thing is the auteurs subculture of indie films maintains distinct differences in story structure. Zero Dark 40 comes to mind. Plenty of things get produced but they don't gain much exposure.

I think television has begun to buck the trend a bit especially nowadays. I look to the Mad Men/Walking Dead/Breaking bad prestige TV as examples. The directors and writers are experimenting more with character studies and different ways to show stories.

0

Perhaps it's best not to generalize about US filmmaking to such an extreme degree. I review films and there are may indie films who experiment with form, style, structure, plotting, non-plotting, structure.

I appreciate all kinds of storytelling but each style has its good and its bad.

I suspect what might appear shallow to Asian audiences is simply cultural accommodation which is not something generally done in a homogeneous culture. Basically, American art doesn't wish to leave anyone in the audience feeling clueless. We continually have new immigrants, who are not part of the Anglo-Saxon or Euro-culture. In addition, our movies are seen worldwide. So a character's motivation/thoughts/goals/ must be made comprehensible to many cultures within the US but also in India, China, Korea, Africa, Greece, Middle East, Phillipines, Indonesia, etc etc etc etc. So we can't have a Brexit view of movies because movies are a communal art and our community is so multicultural. Asian cultures share much of the same values, religions, and traditions. They might have many cultures but they do not attempt to embrace all cultures so they don't try to force their art to accommodate those who don't "belong" to the minority culture. I wouldn't therefore, call movies made for a US audience shallow but embracing.

In addition, conflict is part of everyday life. Asian cultures downplay and resist conflict (except in their dramas where the conflict is often stylized unless the drama is tackling greed or corruption...but even then...there isn't too much cultural honesty in some of the Asian dramas because one cannot challenge the society too much. Not saying this always happens but it's the norm.

(For instance I can only think of two or three Japanese or Korean dramas that deal with their own country's racism toward others. The Japanese story Smile, and a Korean movie about a non-Korean kid auditioning for a part. But it's rare. The Beauty Inside, a Korean movie, failed because it lacked the courage of its conviction to challenge the Korean obsession with external beauty. So avoidance of conflict doesn't necessarily mean it's about craft and beauty alone. Sometimes it's about cowardice.

Because conflict that challenges the status quo wouldn't be comfortable for an Asian audience. Whereas, American filmmakers have no problem with making films and documentaries that challenge the viewer.)

All humans live in conflict. It's part of life. American cinematic storytelling and western storytelling tradition acknowledges that conflict. In Asian countries, conflict exist as well. But, as I wrote before, there is a desire to avoid conflict. Hierarchy rules, not wanting people to lose face, not being a squeaky wheel, not challenging the status quo...these are part of what makes the non-conflict storytelling somewhat shady and unsatisfactory and somewhat cowardly. I'm not against such kinds of storytelling. But let's not kid ourselves and say...

I did note that outside of mainstream films there are ones that break the three act structure. (If you read up there I gave Being John Malcovich).

But I did note the main difference is that Koreans treat it as mainstream, major box office film, while the US tends to not.

I also disagree about the conflict aspect. Most of it is lazy Aristotle, as noted. The guy, you know that hated pretty much all females determined the majority of films and plays thereafter. It's more tradition and absolute admiration of Greeks and Romans dating from Shakespeare's upholding of it, than it is anything else.

I also noted that turn of the century was much more experimental as well... but under Gertrude Stein that pretty much changed. That woman had a huge influence on US lit.

I'm making fun of the US, because I get to, as you know, a Korean-American. I also get to thoroughly dislike the rigidity of story telling thought as a writer, as well--as an insider that's watched and listened to "advice" on the "best" way to write a story and gotten rejections for experimenting, 'cause you know, not white enough. (And US, in this case, I'm mostly referring to the mainstream Hollywood white middle class stuff... I recognize other story telling conventions like the African American Lit (Heavy influences from West Africa) and Native American lit. Working my way through Latino lit/Latino-American Lit, though I want to read more non-Magic Realism and also less "PoCs are always poor and in need of rescue" kind of crap that the US publishes.)

I've read Chinese, Korean, US, Greek, UK, Canada, NZ, Aussie, and Japanese lit. Also some worldwide lit/folktales.

There is some thought, though, that because of the way Europe was in heavy conflict that conflict became central. Some Lit from Central African countries/tribes, I've heard are not as conflict-based either, not because of collectivism, as you suggest, but because the view of time and urgency is less.

I don't judge and make fun out of ignorance. I judge because I'm frickin' frustrated at the rigidity that I encounter with (white mainstream) US lit and movies--also the US's absolute arrogance that their way of telling stories is "best" while the rest of the world is "wrong". When if they actually poked their heads out of their butts once in a while, they might discover something more interesting and challenging.

So no, your theory doesn't fly. It's more like Europe has always been a lot more conflict-based from the start, historically and otherwise, that it influenced the way stories are told. Because stories are confirmation of the way we live or aspiring to ways we could live better, most of the time.

0

*Native American tribes lit. I messed up. Sorry.I should have said, "I do recognize the different story telling traditions of different indigenous tribes."

Again, sorry...

I see that most of this drama recently as your example of BG, AOHY, and LR is a character driven story when each character choice changed the plot and not moved towards some plot (because that's not the goal).

so when the viewer disconnected with the character choice, it's become clashed, the story will follow the character route but the viewer seems to don't care anymore, especially when there's no big plot guide for the viewer.

the thing I find different between Jdrama and Kdrama is the approached. KDrama seems a little bit shy to make out the worst and make viewer root for the worst despite knowing the character is not supposed to be route, it still clings to the perfect, ideal man and woman with great visual to boost and make the perfect ending,
While in Jdrama, the short format, and the not so visually astonishing lead make a better approach for the genre. They willing to be dirty and hated till the end.

as example
I can't say I like Shun Oguri's character in ouroboros but I can't say that I have a better ending for him, it fitted,
in the other hands, I like the beginning of AOHY but I can't agree with the changed on the plot in favor for the character since, for me, the character need to change the plot to make a better story telling in this format.
I would have felt better if he, DK or TJ find it 1st about chairman Jang rather than being told to the viewer as his flashback,
or I find myself overexposed to OHY in the drama to the point that I do not even care about her since she always did that

some Jdrama also suffers from very unrealistic cute/naive girl or character that hard to change and didn't really changed throughout the series, but this character usually given another impression when they dealt with different problem for having more favorable impression

TL;DR I find Kdrama needs to fix the habits of having perfect lead to fit this kind of genre better

Yes!!!!

Oh god yes. This is exactly my complain with the criticism of OHY. People immediately disconnected because if everyone isn't perfect they aren't worth looking at. It was a disturbing thought. Western/South Asian media at least does a headfake if not full on tries to create stories of imperfection and outright nihilism. Yet when the same subject comes up in Eastern media it doesn't translate. No one wants to know whats in your head so long as you look pretty + say the right lines? Is it because of the Korean obsession with image and outward show?

Is it because of the Korean obsession with image and outward show?

I never learn SK society but that's the impression that I also get.
It really baffling somehow I people said plain OHY is plain because she definitely isn't, and it's really nice to see Park So Dam in small screen since she is not the typical ideal face in Kdrama heroine

if you've seen proposal daisakusen and operation proposal, or liar game both version, the theme might show better
Yamapi is handsome but him in proposal daisakusen is really unnoticed (maybe because his acting skill atm or another factor) which make it so believable the heroine miss his approach on the original time line

on the flip side, Yoo Seung-hoo is just so charming in operation proposal that it hard to believe someone can be so dense to his approach, he is hard to be unnoticed with all the charm

it almost the same with Liar game, the Jdrama a take the naivety far away and make the male lead beyond belief, then Kdrama make them achievable in real life which makes less impact if it follows the same story (granted, they changed the show format so it's relatable)

and thank you for this
People immediately disconnected because if everyone isn’t perfect they aren’t worth looking at

I think the nuance of the character shows in US series, it's in Avatar : The last Airbender animation (the movie never existed), the Zuko's character arc .
It's beautiful to see someone acknowledging his wrongdoing and move for the right thing,
I almost wrote DK and Zuko comparison if it's his fault but the thought disappears.

Avatar did more then a few character arcs well. There is hardly a villian (even Firelord Azulon) who wasn't well developed and compelling. Can you imagine someone trying to portray Azula in kdrama land? dear god she would end up in a pink skirt crying....

Ok that was reductive but yeah I agree.

0

Due to shorter format, Japanese dramas tend to be heavily thematic compared to Taiwan, China, and Korea. Themes work a lot better in shorter formats and can help with the plotting. Sometimes in Japanese dramas, the character and events will completely bow to the theme rather than any plot structure.

The Airbender movie didn't exist. Nope.

South Koreans are more obsessed with Saving face (Japanese used to be before industrialization), but that's not the same as the shiny perfect actors, which is totally US-influence. 'cause North Korea is different...

0

"KDrama seems a little bit shy to make out the worst and make viewer root for the worst despite knowing the character is not supposed to be route, it still clings to the perfect, ideal man and woman with great visual to boost and make the perfect ending,"

Yeah, lots of that is unfortunately influences from the US. Traditional Korean Lit doesn't have these features.

The tendency towards celebrating Makjang, especially in the melos where the makjang comes from nowhere is this other concept called "Han" (you can look it up under wikipedia Han, cultural) And that Irish and Jews probably would recognize a version of in their own cultures.

The traditional Korean romance ending isn't a perfect bow at all, but ends with the Dramabeans much hated long separation, which is the ultimate in open endings.

The super closed ending is US influence on ROK. Apparently North Koreans dramas aren't this way... though I haven't been able to keep a straight face long enough to try. Open endings are used to usually make the viewer/reader think harder.

" I can’t agree with the changed on the plot in favor for the character since, for me, the character need to change the plot to make a better story telling in this format."

Usually in this type of formatting, where events are low key, the point is to change only *one* attribute of the character the entire story. So for AOHY, DK needed to accept and express his feelings. That was the whole point. OHY, both of them, needed to accept their name and the other person.

BTW, plot, for me is both events and character. It's still a plot because it has events, but the emphasis is not on conflict.

In US plotting, events drive character, character drives events (Unless an action movie) for a grand huge character arc and change and this is highlighting usually a conflict, which is usually more event than character based. For example, "What's the worst thing ever that could happen to this character?" is usually how you plot the climax. Notice the amount of event words in there.

When you take out the conflict and downplay the events, you can do a lot more into character study, such as character history, previous character interactions, and plot out for one change in the character arc.

Re: Perfect lead.
Usually morally upright but ugly character teaches morals story type. Perfect looking is US influence, if they include it. (BGS is pretty on the money for this type.)

Probably influenced by Korean folktales. I think Shim Cheong would exemplify this quite a bit. A little more recent clay animation "Doggy Poo" also exemplifies this. Heavy Chinese influence as well from Confucianism/Neo-Confucianism, somewhat Buddhism (early Korean folktales don't have this type).

Imperfect characters that aren't necessarily likable is usually closer to traditional style pre-Joseon, also explains Japan a bit and why Japanese folktales run differently.

Flashbacks are also common in...

AOHY was highly, highly Korean in the way it handled things. Every single plotting decision felt very Korean. That's why I was surprised to find a following. I was expecting more hatred like Warm and Cozy.

I think thats why I appreciated OHYA so much from a production stand point. It was very different form what i'm used to. The sense of being adrift in time (there is almost no sense of time progression in the story, dates etc). Events just occur in some sequence. You have no idea when they occur int he sequence.

0

...this other concept called “Han” (you can look it up under wikipedia Han, cultural) And that Irish and Jews probably would recognize a version of in their own cultures.

Thank you for confirming one of my suspicions. The first time I heard "Arirang" about 35 years ago, I was surprised by how Irish it felt... and not just because of the scale, either. The parallels in the countries' histories, with millennia of tribal infighting, domination by invaders, and later, emigration (called "the white death" by the Irish during the famine years), are obvious. No wonder I sense resonance.

@Kim Yoonmi,

I went back to your post in OHYA ep. 17 recap and found your reply. Thanks for the pointer to Dream Record. Now I understand. For a second I thought it had to do with Akashic records...

I looked up Gale's translation of Dream of Nine Clouds over at Google Books and read the lengthy introduction. Fascinating, and something I look forward to reading.

Many thanks for your clear and detailed insights into the underpinnings of Korean culture -- some of which overlaps with neighboring cultures. I was hoping to get more of a handle on the metaphysics that crop up in dramas like OHYA, and I appreciate your taking the time to provide such a detailed "roadmap."

Your overview of Mugyo is fascinating, and in some ways there are parallels in pre-Christian Irish spirituality, which I can use as a stepping stone. I was particularly interested in your comment about there being two souls, as the elemental being charged with manifesting and maintaining the physical body was dropped from Christianity and demonized long ago. Soul and spirit are two different things, but it took me a long time to catch on.

In the final episode of OHYA, Hae Young refers to the unseen realm that has been opened up to her through her association with DK. I really liked that, and how it underscored the lengths to which his soul(s) went to awaken his heart.

Re: Kishōtenketsu structure that unfolds without the underlying premise of conflict that is the bedrock of Western three-act dramas. So that explains the sometimes draggy beginnings of Kdramas. Lots of exposition and setting up the stage... Without the central conflict so familiar to Western viewers, the action doesn't necessarily take off. I've learned to hang loose and see what unfolds -- and how.

Eureka! I think this just explained why the film TURNING GATE left me confused and underwhelmed. (There could be other reasons, too.)

Re: Nunchi

Thanks for that! I watched BGS ep. and spotted that example at 51:00 (Viki). So that's the sound of observing subtle clues while one's wheels turn -- tuning in to one's radar. ;-)

I watched each episode of OHYA raw twice, so I could pay attention to stuff I wouldn't be able to see while reading subtitles.

Based on your description, I do that already -- but then again, I learned long ago that I'm pretty much an INFP (introversion, intuition, feeling, perception) via the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator.

Maybe for some viewers, it's easier to follow Kdramas if they are Intuiters. Add the element of perception (gathering data vs. making a decision based on it), and it may be easier for Perceivers to just keep watching even when "nothing" seems to be happening.

(I've taken the MBTI more than once and have also rated as an E(xtrovert)NFP. The tester said that a person on the borderline could flip either way on the basis of a single question...)

Your Welcome.

Yep.

Much of the shamanistic religions have a lot of overlap. Korean Shamanism (Mugyo) has influences from Mongolian and Siberian Shamanism.

Many Shamanistic religions also have more than one soul... in general.

I think you'd find stronger parallels between the Celtic Shamanism and the early Wujiao of China. (Wuism in English) They both believe in a center direction... and both had celebrations with a pole to represent that center direction. It's admittedly hard to find anything about Wuism, but that's mainly due to male oppression of the religion, since the early version was 100% female (and QUILTBAG inclusive). (CIS Males just get jealous so easily. ;) So fragile.)

I also think some of the draggy beginnings are from Chinese story telling where the idea is to get a handle on the characters first, lay it all out and then handle the events without doing the integration that the US so treasures (these days--older lit around the 1900's didn't ask for integration. Only until Gertrude Stein).

So a Korean drama might follow a three act structure, but then slow down in the beginning to lay out the characters, so then it can make the events go faster without doing any flashbacks or review. You're supposed to remember 100% of all of the front info dump. Totally valid way to tell a story, but also hated in the US. (Snarking here... Low attention span/memory would be the Chinese view.)

A Chinese version of this would be the famous Record of the Three Kingdoms. The first chapter is all character intros and background. Exposition is much stronger in Chinese dramas (mainland), though. Stating the obvious is something that I heard Chinese speakers say is different from English.

A Korean version of this... is roughly Lady Hyegyeong. (Not fiction) She sets out to introduce all of the characters and background. She's vilified these days, but I think it's because people hate a strong woman. But they couldn't throw her out either because she's the only one that really talks about inner court workings. So many Joseon dramas with her as a villain are back stabbing themselves.

Other lit from that time period, especially fiction do this sort of thing too... such as Unyongjeon.

I think the ideal Korean type (from folktales) would be ENFP (especially cis female leads) INTP, probably for males.... but definitely stronger intuition, being sensitive, and perceptive are really treasured. When I was growing up in Korea, my sensitivity was super treasured. It's hated in the US.

BTW, from Korean folktales you'll see a lot of animal to human transformations or the other way. That's 100% Mugyo influence. (You can usually find those online for free). You can kinda find out more also (besides the books I referred to) in the Samguk Yusa.

Hello Beanies! Happy Friday! And to my fellow Americans, Happy 4th of July weekend!

This week I didn't watch any of my dramas. I basically slept all week; I may be coming down with something and watching dramas just didn't seem appealing. I ended up watching Weekly Idol episodes because I needed a laugh.

That being said, however, I am going to watch the last two episodes of Oh Hae-Young Again. I love the show and I want to know what's really happening to Do-kyung and if he gets hit by the car or not. I've stayed away from the recaps because I don't want to be spoiled.

I also didn't watch last weekend's episodes of Beautiful Gong Shim, though I'm glad that viewers have said it's getting back to its happy and quirky dynamics. Hooray, because depressed Dan-tae really was painful to watch, and the broken bromance even more painful.

Haven't caught up on Lucky Romance, though I am loving every second of Ryu Jun-yeol. I will admit the kiss from last week was adorable, and I really can't wait for Bo-nui to finally fall for him, too.

Squad 38 is a surprise hit with me! I'm loving how different it is from the rest of the drama lineup, and Seo In-Guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk. Enough said.

I might drop Wanted, Doctors, and Beautiful Mind. I watched the first 4 eps of Wanted, and while they were good, if a little hard to believe, I'm not sure I really want to watch such a dark show. Doctors... eh, not really my thing. The teacher-student flirting and stuff that I've read in the recap for episode 2 kind of creeps me out. And Beautiful Mind isn't really interesting me, either, despite how much I really liked Park So-dam and whoever that cute doctor with the glasses was. Anyone think I should give these shows another try?

Doctors picks up again around episode 4. FF through the first three to know what's happening. Pay attention to the Grandma scenes but yeah just head for episode 4.

After the finale of Another Miss Oh (sigh... How I'll miss you!) and Master of Noodles (oh, Cho Jae-Hyun I simply love you). My triplet of lovely rom-coms has been reduced to a duo now; Beautiful Gong Shim and Lucky Romance. And unfortunately they both near their finale. Sniff!
I'm also trying to keep up with Doctors. I'm a fan of Kim Rae-Won since I saw the Sunflower. I've always thought he's a great and bit underated in k-drama and movie world. But this time... This couple... Hm... The age gap I've managed to overcome in Beautiful Gong Shim, Lucky Romance, even the Beautiful Mind and Mirror of the Witch is somehow over-accentuated here making me a little uncomfortable and embarassed to be watching them in the high school years.. And in reality the actors are just nine years apart according to the data bases. Plus I could not believe that the writer is the the one from Warm Word, Can we get married and High Society. I thought it was some newbie trying to include all the cliches, -high schools, girls dressed in uniforms, fights, mean girls, older dudes etc-, but not very skilfully in an awkward attempt to copy Kim Eun-Sook.
Having said that, no, I'm not giving up yet 'cause Park Shin-Hye is an adult now so I keep my fingers crossed.

HEHE the latest episode of Lucky Romance gave me diabetes because of how sweet they were LOL All of Ryu Jun Yeol's expressions are just so adorable OMGF. I hope I can see him more in dramaland. Anyways I wonder if this thread is okay for me to rant about my love for BigBang since I am a huge VIP. Their concert gave me huge post concert depression if that is even a thing. I am really excited to watch their MADE documentary but I don't think it will come out in theaters in where I live. I hope it will make it to Los Angeles but I don't know :( *WAILLLLLLLSSSS* I'm really excited to watch the drama with Gong Yoo and Kim Go Eun :D Hopefully the korean netizens don't last Go Eun too much because yeesh some of theie reactions made me sad because I like Go Eun alot.

now i am looking forward to watching TGWife, she's excellent!

Right in the middle of a training session we briefly dished on Six Flying Dragons and Discovery of Romance and I recc'd Oh Hae Young Again to her (she seems to be an Eric fan!)

Happy Friday everyone!

I've been a lurker for a while now. This is my first time posting on the Open Thread.

I'm watching Doctors right now. I checked it out since I like both Kim Rae-won and Park Shin-hye. I'm enjoying it in spite of its flaws such as its rather unsubtle directing. I normally don't watch shows live nor do I watch romance dramas much, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless. I do hope the hospital politics stuff is kept to a minimum however, before it turns into a low-rent White Tower.

I've also been trying to get my hands on some older Korean dramas from the 90's and early 2000's since some of them are much better and daring than some of the recent offerings of K-drama unfortunately. I got my hands on an old 1996 sageuk drama, Im Kkeokjeong, since I heard it was good. Unfortunately, the WITHS2 subs are missing subtitles for episodes 31-34. Good thing I have some knowledge of Korean that I can try to watch it raw.

I also found out this morning that 2014 sageuk Jeong Do-jeon has English subtitles out on OnDemandKorea. I'll probably put it on my watch list for later since I heard it was good as well.

Have a good day everyone!

I believe you are supposed to type "the text you want bold" and to end the bold. Type this without spaces between the arrow punctuation and the "b."

I forgot the slash in my post so the entire thing became bold.

It should look something like this.

I'm going to sleep.

Damn it didn't show the code.

Type "" to start the bold and "" to end the bold. Remove the quotes and spaces.

0

I'm sorry, it keeps transmitting the code you have to type.

Type the "less than arrow" and then use 'b' for bold and close it with the "greater than arrow" at the beginning of the word you want to bold. To end the bold, use the same method at the end of the word but put a slash before 'b'. Like this: '/b'

Here is a link.

I also have been a lurker for years! I just decided this week that I am going to post more. Probably, because I am watching more KDramas than I have watched in a long time!

I am also watching Doctors right now and while I agree with you about it's flaw I am going to continue watching it for now because there are quite a few actors I like in this drama!

I am also watching

Police Unit 38- I tried this out this week and I think I will continue to watch it. I am liking the Ocean's Eleven vibe! I will see what next week brings.

Mirror of the Witch - I love fusion sageuk and this one is still keeping my interest. I have been wary of the genre ever since the disappointment of Gu Family Book but even though I felt it lagged a bit it seems to be picking up again.

Five children- My first long weekend drama! I have always avoided these because they seem soooo long, but I am really enjoying this! Maybe it is because I am watching while it is airing, but I so excited for every new episode!

I also finally got around to watching Signal recently and can I say WOW. This is the reason I am feeling much more ambivalent than usual about most of the dramas I am watching. This needs a 2nd season!

Happy Fourth of July every one!
We have the Olympic Track and Field Trials in town starting today and they have a fantastic free area for viewing as well as lots of fun stuff going on for the next ten days! I am very excited! Does anyone else have Olympic trials near them? I know that swimming has been going on this but I don't know about any others!
Enjoy the Fireworks! ;)

Welcome t the obession!

How fun was the wedding scenes in 5 Children??

It finally got me back into liking the main couple. Honestly all the back and forth with the moms in laws got to me. I was ready to wash my hands of them but then the bed shopping scene just dragged me back in :)

Thank You! I am definitely obsessed. It took me 2 days to watch all 16 episodes. I would have watched it in one day but I decided to get a full nights sleep.
The bed shopping scene was fantastic. Thank you Ahn Jae-Wook. Those scenes are why I watch this drama. The in-laws are annoying me but now I just skip over them if I don't like the scene. And I always skip over any scenes with the annoying middle brother and his baby mama, they piss me off.

Eh it's just that their story is so quickly done and over with. The actors don't get much to work with the poor duo. I wish they had transitioned into wise old mentors for the younger crowd instead of getting drama of their own.

Welcome! Glad you decided to join the OT squee:).

I was lucky enough to get into K dramas while MisterX and WITHS2 sub squad (I think JB was part of it) were still active. X is the history buff and very knowledgeable with K-drama/film and the K- ent industry. I believe he was the subber for Im Kkeokjeong. (The real Korean Robin Hood).
Sadly the site is no longer active and missing some episodes :(I know juniper was watching it so maybe you might want to ask her if she dl the whole series).

Jeong Do-jeon is the last authentic sageuk to date so enjoy it. Don't know when we are going to get another one.
KBS is so dang stingy. They should release more of their older sageuks. Those that are collecting dust somewhere in their station.
If they ever get a rerun of Tears of the Dragon with subs I'd die and go to heaven.

My periodic K-Drama Rant Drunk, drunker, and drunkest.

From time to time I get on my horse and rant about things, just because I can. This time it is wondering why the excessive drinking problem in Korea is never ever addressed in K-dramas.

Korea has the highest alcohol consumption in the world, by far - 5x the US rate, and 2x the Russian rate, which is in 2nd place. It has the highest alcoholism rate in the world, highest liver disease rate, highest booze related accidental death rate, and one of the highest booze-fueled domestic abuse rates.

Yet this subject seems almost totally taboo in K-dramas - which in fact seems to encourage it to the max. It is almost impossible find a K-drama that does not feature scene after scene of people getting drunk out of their minds, passing out all over, puking in the streets, binge drinking, and the like.

I guess my real question is why is this subject almost totally ignored both by the government, media, and TV shows?

because nobody would voluntarily admit they have an addiction?

I have gotten mad at the drinking too many times. especially when women drink.

in Estonia it is also in reality a big problem, but rather than ignored, I think it is not viewed as a problem at all but as some sort of social milestone. if you dont drink, you are seen as somewhat handicapped. you must have terminal illness, bossy mom, you are either pregnant or a nun.
lately, there are opposite trends too though. for me, it has never been a matter of any effort or summoning willpower. I just have no relationship with booze. I dont like to share communal lovers. but for most people all around, it seems staying sober only happens when they are plotting a murder.

I think it is probably difficult to admit to a collective addiction to a poison (cause that is what alcohol is, really). and it is a cheap replacement for the real desires.

Required fields are marked *

Addiction to Alcohol is addressed: Lucky Romance, episode 11 and the not talked about, but really good Bubble Gum.

Bubble Gum was excellent to me, though I know some people disliked it because OMG, all of the characters were flawed and the pacing was slow and there was a ton of symbolism throughout. But it's also the best representation of mental health to date. It smoothly from the POV of the characters dealing with it, dealt with addiction to Alcohol, PTSD, Dementia, etc, written in a gentle PoV.

But remember the mental health in SK has to be 100% treated in distant hospitals in suburbs. The treatment plans are low.

Also, I think alcohol consumption in the US is lower because the other drug addiction is higher. If there were banned drugs in the US, then the alcohol consumption would be higher. South Korea is very strict on drugs being imported or used.

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't think drug addiction has much to do with alcohol consumption. Correlation is not causation.

I will say that the US has a long history of fighting alcohol. There was a constitutional amendment about it. It did get revoked eventually but the feelings that provoked it still exist. Drinking age is 21 here for a reason.

0

Required fields are marked *

The drug use in the US is a long ways from equalling the drinking in Korea. The problem in Korea is that binge drinking and drinking to the point of blacking out is socially acceptable. And the fact that Soju is not taxed is another one - Soju is cheaper than many soft drinks.

Required fields are marked *

It is almost totally ignored. But then again, it is the reality in Korea. Seeing people getting totally blotto is not unusual. Before I visited Korea, I thought it was probably exaggerated in dramas, but travelling back from Gangnam to my hotel one night at 11.30pm on line 2, the train was rammed solid with people, a lot of whom were very, very drunk. Men in suits with briefcases totally and completely drunk, young women so drunk they couldn't even stand up and had to be dragged along by their boyfriends. And this was on a Wednesday night, not even the weekend. It's a reality in Korea. Dramas are just reflecting that reality.

Because drinking has become so integral to their bonding process and business practices. It's also part of their work hard, play hard mentality.

I realize the causes, what bothers me in K-dramas is the fact that so many glorify getting totally smashed out your mind - to the point where puking on people and getting so drunk you need to get carried home has become a romantic trope. In Korean dramas, the answer to every single problem is to get blind drunk.

Fabulous Boys was my most recent Jiro Wang. I thought I would drop it because I disliked You Are Beautiful. But it made me appreciate the characters more. It is a bit silly so I can understand not being able to get through it.

My Jiro Wang experience has been ISwaK & TKA -> Absolute Boyfriend -> Fabulous Boys = from Sept 2014 - now. I might have to take a break for fear of overwhelming myself with Jiro.

What would you recommend for when I do pick up another one?

0

Purple Owl: It's been a few years since I watched his older series. I remember finishing ToGetHer and Momo Love (the brothers were funny).
The Crossing Hero started out great but then it fizzled and I dropped it ?

I almost added ToGetHer a while back but for some reason I didn't. It looks interesting. And it has Mandy Wei, who is in I Do, I Do. I'll wait to finish that and then maybe ToGetHer.

Thank you!

yes! Someone else is watching Corey and Topanga's daughter. It's a typical Disney show but has everything I that makes me feel nostalgic about being a tween.

BMW started before I was born but I grew up on it. So I had to watch where they ended up, lol.

Re: Gossipy
The love triangle is driving me crazy. I was just telling my eonnie, I wish it was like a kdrama and told me from the beginning who would be with who. I don't mind Riley/Lucas aka Rucas. I just feel Lucaya ? have more chemistry. And I've thought that since the first episode. I wish they didn't bring in that possibility because while it does tell a good story, it doesn't help my opinion of the characters.

Sorry, minor rant. It's a touchy subject. Farkle is way too attractive. As one fan commented on YouTube "Puberty hit Corey harder than that bus hit Regina", kekeke love a witty Mean Girls reference. Doesn't squick me out too much. I'm a '95 liner to his '99, but that's probably because I've been in love with Lucas since the show started.

Love talking Disney Channel!

Meh, the love triangle stuff is always touchy for pre-teens. Live long enough (I'm only 27 but still) and you get used to it. I have 100 bucks on they all end up not dating at all and move on.

On the whole puberty and Corey thing...hell yeah. Thank god he had personality. I had to live through that so thank god I had some other eye candy on the show. Even his dad was way hotter poor guy.

I will admit to being completely shocked that Lucas is 17 fucking teen. I think I needed a few days to close my dropped mouth. Never was there that cute a guy when I had TV...

0

Lol, yes love triangles (and square, pentagon, hexagon, etc. is what TV and story telling lives for). Supposedly we'll get our answers regarding coupling soon.

I don't usually mind love triangles (there was one on L&M this year as well), I just dislike how early it is and how dragged out. Either wait until they aren't playing 13-15 year olds or solve it quickly. My best friend gets frustrated and then I remind her that we would have been handling it the same at that age.

If this show does end up running as long as BMW, I think they made a mistake writing for late high school BMW in the first seasons. But hey, kids grow up faster these days (I didn't bUT then again I'm mid 90s not early 2000s)

I miss the adorkable Farkle a little. Don't get me wrong, he's still a dork and cute. But I miss his randomness and noises. But Smarkle, the pair, makes up for his growing up. Wish Isadora was present more.

The moment Lucas was introduced "DC has not lost their talent for perfect teenage boys" - and I was 18, ekkkk, major squick! So I was very, very relieved when I found out Peyton was only 3 years younger than me. I was like "I'm getting older and the Disney Channel studs aren't getting squick-er! Oh, good Peyton at least could be in college at the same time as me" kekeke

But there's always my Disney Channel favorite Luke Benward. He's '95 line like me, but a few months older. Score!

0

I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THIS GMW DISCUSSION!

Girl meets world is the only American show that I've kept up with since I have entered dramaland. Goes to show how loyal I am to Boy meets world, which was one of my favourite shows growing up and ohhh the nostalgia!

I've grown to love GMW for what it is and especially for the characters (I love them all but Zay and Riley are the ones that make me laugh the most). My favourite part is still the special cameos. It feels like meeting up with old friends whenever the old BMW gang shows up (especially precious Eric).

I also watch Girl Meets world on occasion! Definitely a nostalgia thing. Yup...grew up in the 90's.

What American Shows am I watching?

The Last Ship: What can I say, it's McSteamy. Okay, I also do enjoy a good distaster/action drama. You know the end of the world is coming but it's alright because you are with us you will survive and always Do the Right Thing.

Major Crimes: My mom got me into this show back when it was The Closer with Kyra Sedgewick. Mary McDonnell is amazing! As I am sure you BSG fans know!

Nothing else current, though I may check out the SyFy show Killjoys when it premieres tonight...I don't know.

There really isn't a lot of GOOD Sci-Fi programming on TV these days. The best I've see recently is The Expanse based on a series of novels. It was pretty good, could have been better but it certainly attempted to fill the void in sci-fi programming. I do think it has the potential to improve and be really good if the right people are behind it.

Okay ... stopping before I write a novel!

Yes, j-dramas are more my speed. When done well, they're thematically rich and characterisation is superb. Let me know if you need recs!

I'm so glad you're liking Nodame Cantabile. It's my favourite j-drama to date, and as you've said, the actors are perfect in their roles. Chiaki senpai <3 And there's so much fantastic music, right down to the background music - all classical! After the drama, there are 2 SPs (of adventures in Europe) and 2 films, so hopefully you get to complete the entire thing!

0

I didn't know there was so much to the live action. I'm glad they go to Europe. That arc was possibly my favorite in the anime. More to warch, yay!

Yes to any recommendations. I like mostly youth and college storylines but a good work drama is also nice, if a little less relatable for me.

0

I'm not sure what you've watched, but I'll toss in some recs of other dramas by the leads, and then some of my personal favourites. I tend towards stuff involving working adults, less college/youth storylines, but hopefully you'll find something you like!

Ueno Juri
- Last Friends
- Swing Girls (film - youth)

Tamaki Hiroshi
- Shikaotoko Aoniyoshi
- Love Shuffle
- Waterboys (film - youth)
- Tada, Kimi wo Aishiteru (film)

Eita
- Orange Days
- Last Friends
- Soredemo, Ikite Yuku

Other recs:
- Love Revolution
- Long Vacation
- Hotaru no Hikari (2 seasons, 1 film)
- JIN (medical, 2 seasons)
- Neko Zamurai (if you like cats, 2 seasons)
- Shinya Shokudo (3 seasons, 1 film)
- Liar Game (2 seasons, SPs, films)
- Kekkon Dekinai Otoko
- Hero (legal, 2001)
- Soratobu Taiya
- Gaiji Keisatsu
- Yami no Bansosha

I nearly bust a gut laughing through Waterboys and Swing Girls, so if nothing else, I hope you like those!

0

It's late so I can't make a full discovery or response. Thank you so much for the recs.

I looked at the beginning dramas only. Last Friends, Orange Days look good. Love Shuffle, Love Revolution, Long Vacation seems amazing. Switch off dating, 'old'er dating gives so much to support, and forced cohabitation is a perfect trope.

Thank you. I look forward to giving the list more time when I'm not falling asleep. And I've already added those 5 to my watchlist. Let's get there soon!

Hi all! Long time no post.

I am starting to slowly get back into watching Kdramas again. Task Force 38 seems a good enough drama to get my feet wet since Seo In Guk has always been entertaining. During my hiatus, I actually ended up getting into KPOP. I quickly kinda got burned out on it though. Going into KPOP forums is probably one of the most toxic things I have ever experienced. People were so vicious, petty and the trolls were everywhere. lol It was like free for all bullying.

I also got hooked on a variety show called Talents for Sale hosted by Grumpy Seojinnie, Crazy Hongchul, Kim Jong Kook and super cutie Kim Sejeong. You guys should check it out!

Contemplating on going to KCON LA but I don't think my back can take it and being in a wheelchair would be too much of a pain with it being crowded and all. oh well..

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Kpop fandom is the most painful I've known, especially when you're multi-fandom. I'm sorry you've been burned. Please don't put too much interest in the fans. We have a tendency of making each other like the groups less. And the idols work too hard for that. Remember the bigger the fandom, the higher rate of immature fans. But there are mature ones out there, as rare as they seem.

Kpopnation forever!

He turned from cheeky suave con man to a super serious city plan employee smoothly like I was watching 2 different dramas.

And that scene when he met the corrupt cop, he was so full of fear and only his survival instinct appeared with no single trace of his confident con artist aura.

I think I fall in love again with this man. Gukkieee!!!
